My first thought of becoming a massage therapist was in 1988. There were many reasons why I thought about it and many reasons why I did not follow through. The year 2016 was going to become a major turning point in my life. 16 years with the same employer is great, but not having much personal growth.....that can really weigh on a person’s head and heart. After much thought of “what do I want to do now” I decided, in July 2016, to finally take a serious look into the FLSM Program. Lucky stars!!! They were just starting a part-time morning program in November for those that wanted to go to FLSM and have their evenings free to work a full time jobs or raise families. 13 months, I CAN DO THIS!!!
Wow, was I under estimating a Massage Therapists credentials. The work was hard. The tests seemed to be unforgiving. And the clinic hours.....oh my god!!! I was overwhelmed many times. And sometimes I was angry at anything and everything. But yet, somehow, there was fun and excitement EVERY SINGLE DAY!! It was great! And then, when it seemed like there was no end in site....graduation happened in December 2017!! Sweet.....but the NYS Boards soon followed.
To keep up with my studies, I finally left my employer of 17 years and started working at a Spa under a permit status. Spa life and studying was my way of life for 4 weeks. State Board Testing Day finally came and I was nervous, crying, and sick to my stomach but had to face the 140 question test. Then......the longest wait occurred....waiting for NYS to send results. Finally a letter in mid February......I PASSED. Life is good at this point.
Saving and working for a future, not knowing when I will take the next step towards my own future. So day to day I went. Then....BOOM....a post on Facebook of an office site for rent. I made a call to go see office and the rest is literally reality and history. Here I am: A licensed massage therapist with a DBA of Gypsy Rose Massage.
