The Cornell Tradition Fellowship

The Cornell Tradition Fellowship "I have always been in favour of combining labour and study." -Ezra Cornell, 1846

Representing just 4% of the Cornell undergraduate population, The Cornell Tradition Fellowshipis a contemporary expression of the founder's vision. The program awards approximately 500 fellowships each year to students who demonstrate significant work experience, campus and/or community service, and academic achievement. Through The Cornell Tradition, students make meaningful contributions to campus life that will enhance their own education and those of generations to come. At the same time, these students reduce their level of indebtedness incurred in obtaining a Cornell degree. True to the founder's ideals, the Tradition supports the development of fellows into well-rounded, productive members of society who will serve as the role models and leaders of tomorrow.

Big Red, Big Impact – swab to save a life
From March 13–20, Cornellians are driving a campuswide effort to add 10,000 new potential stem cell donors to the NMDP registry. With a simple, free cheek swab, you can help advance lifesaving research and increase the chances of finding matches for patients awaiting transplants. It’s a simple way our community can make an immediate difference.

Recently, a story has brought added urgency to this effort. Juan Uribe, a Cornell alumnus and member of SAE, has reached out to President Michael I. Kotlikoff with an urgent plea. Juan is searching for a life-saving stem cell donor match for his son—and for the many others who are still waiting. His family’s story has gained national attention, highlighting how critical donor registration is right now.

"As somebody who spent my first semester off-campus studying in Brook's DC program, being able to connect with a community of individuals all with passions in service on campus this semester has been one of the highlights of my time so far. Cornell Tradition has provided me the resources to pursue academic, professional, and service initiatives to make my time at Cornell all the more fulfilling." ~Jane Wang, Brooks School of Public Policy, 2029

About Griffin
Griffin Erich is a second-year PhD student in the Horticulture Section at Cornell University, where he studies the biology of apple fruit and leaf cuticles. Co-advised by Dr. Jason Londo and Dr. Jocelyn Rose, he splits his time between the Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York, and Cornell’s main campus. His research explores questions at the physiological, cellular, and biochemical levels.
As a Cornell Tradition Fellow, Griffin served on the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) for two and a half years, helping organize volunteer opportunities at Applefest, the Chili Cook-Off, and the Beechtree Elderly Community. He also worked as a research assistant in the School of Integrative Plant Science and as a visitor services intern at the Johnson Museum of Art. Griffin looks back fondly on his time in Cornell Tradition and especially values the relationships he built with fellow students and program staff.
