ADHD meds ā€œstop workingā€ā€¦ or they were never hitting the root.

If your DNA has methylation variants, your body may struggle to make neurotransmitters efficiently. Genes like MTHFR A1298C can impact how amino acids convert into dopamine + serotonin—something meds don’t fix.

So it’s not just about stimulation… it’s about production.

If your treatment feels off, it might be time to look upstream 🧬

🧬ADHD isn’t influenced by just one gene, and it’s definitely not a one supplement fix per gene variant.

As a nurse practitioner trained in functional medicine, ADHD, and nutrigenomics, I look beyond surface-level DNA results.

šŸŽ™ļøI recently worked with a client showing BHMT 1,2 +/- along with MTRR and MTR +/-. At first glance, you might assume BHMT was the main driver—but their urine amino acids didn’t show glycine and serine being impacted the way we’d expect.

Because these genes sit so close together in the folate and methionine cycle, the real support point wasn’t BHMT alone—it was the junction between MTR and MTRR, where neurotransmitter balance is heavily influenced. AND IT GETS MUCH DEEPER THAN JUST THESE 3 GENES.

šŸ‘©ā€āš•ļøThis is exactly why my 3-step framework goes far beyond DNA. We have to assess minerals, amino acids, gut health, and the full biochemical picture to understand what’s actually happening in the body.

Genes affect how your ADHD brain makes energy and handles stress.

A few important ones:

• MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, BHMT – methylation
• CBS, SUOX – cysteine and glutathione production
• ACAT1 – mitochondrial energy
• COMT, MAO‑A – neurotransmitter breakdown

āœ…These systems together rely on key amino acids like:

• Cysteine → helps make glutathione (your brain’s main antioxidant)
• Lysine → helps produce carnitine to fuel mitochondria

šŸ›‘šŸ‘‡When these pathways struggle, it can show up as:

brain fog
ADHD burnout
low mental energy

My husband was tired of relying on Adderall and dealing with the afternoon exhaustion.

So I used my training as a nurse practitioner specializing in functional medicine and ADHD genetics to look deeper.

Using my 3‑Step DNA Method, we uncovered things most ADHD care never looks at.

Step 1: Decode & Discover
We ran testing to understand his ADHD blueprint, including genetics, mineral balance, and heavy metals affecting brain function.

Step 2: Nourish & Navigate
Based on his results, we supported the specific imbalances affecting focus, mood, sleep, and dopamine function.

Step 3: Align & Advance
As his brain and body stabilized, we simplified the plan and focused on maintaining balance.

Within 3 weeks he needed less Adderall.
Within 3 months he was completely medication‑free.

Because ADHD isn’t always just a brain issue.
Often there are biological root causes that can be supported.

Curious about the genes that impact ADHD?

ADHD is often discussed through symptoms, but there’s another layer worth understanding: how biology may influence those symptoms.

1ļøāƒ£2ļøāƒ£3ļøāƒ£In my 3-Step DNA Method for ADHD, I analyze 30 SNPs related to methylation pathways along with key biological factors including minerals, heavy metals, amino acids, and gut health.

🧬Why these SNPs?

Methylation is involved in processes that affect brain function, including:

• neurotransmitter production
• detoxification pathways
• nutrient metabolism
• regulation of gene expression

Variations in methylation-related genes can influence how efficiently these pathways function. That’s why looking at genetics alone isn’t enough. The nutrient environment around those genes—minerals, amino acids, gut health, and potential toxic exposures—also plays a role in how those pathways operate.

šŸ‘©ā€āš•ļøThis is why my approach looks at both genetics and physiology together, helping identify patterns that may influence focus, mood, and cognitive function.

Extra magnesium wasn’t in this child’s personalized top 8 supplement plan (this is only for the first 3 months—then it usually gets much less).

Using my 3‑Step DNA Method for ADHD, we map how genes affect mineral needs, amino acids, and gut health so the plan is targeted, not guesswork.

šŸ›‘No more 10+ forgotten supplements sitting on the shelf that didn’t work.

Not everyone has a bad experience with stimulants, and I’m not here to judge anyone’s journey.

But when kids are immediately put on stimulants—and then more medications are added to manage side effects—that’s where I pause.🫄

Children’s brains are growing fast and have huge demands for minerals and amino acids. Iron is the #1 mineral deficiency in kids, and it directly impacts dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for focus and motivation.

šŸ«†Using my 3-Step DNA Method for ADHD, we identify gene variants that increase a child’s need for specific nutrients and support the brain with targeted supplements—connecting the missing pieces without relying on medication.

This variant does not usually create the significant methylfolate deficiency people often associate with MTHFR.

Many people with A1298C plus plus actually have a lower need for methylfolate compared to the C677T variant.

Where this variant tends to matter more is BH4 and SAMe, two key players in neurotransmitter production.

BH4 helps produce
dopamine
serotonin
norepinephrine

SAMe supports methylation, which helps regulate neurotransmitter balance and brain signaling.

When BH4 or SAMe demand is higher, it can impact brain chemicals involved in focus, motivation, mood, and attention.

I am a nurse practitioner certified in functional medicine for ADHD and trained in nutrigenomics, and I use genetics as one piece of the bigger picture when supporting brain health.
