We're super excited to announce we will hosting T. Colin Campbell and Seba Johnson on May 4th at 5 pm! Together, they will be discussing plant-based athleticism.

T. Colin Campbell, PhD has been dedicated to the science of human health for more than 60 years. His primary focus is on the association between diet and disease, particularly cancer. Although largely known for the China Study–one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted, and recognized by The New York Times as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology”–Dr. Campbell’s profound impact also includes extensive involvement in education, public policy, and laboratory research.

Seba Johnson became the first black woman and youngest Alpine racer to ski at the Olympics when she competed for the U.S. Virgin Islands at age 14 in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. Seba is also a lifelong vegan and animal rights activist.

Hello CVS members/allies!

Please come by Goldwin Smith Hall today at 6pm (there will be FREE food). Christopher Sebastian, a social justice advocate and lecturer at Columbia, will discuss case studies that reveal how white nationalists use animal exploitation as a marker of white identity, how this manifests in Donald Trump's America, and how rejecting animal use can be used a tool of political resistance.
His work examines the complex relationship between animal violence environmental racism, classism, and capitalism. He also does activism for LGBTQ communities as well as homeless people.

We look forward to seeing you there!

There may be ‘Canada’ in the name, but Canada Geese can be found here in Ithaca on Beebe Lake. It is their feathers that are used by . The company claims that the removal of their feathers is done in a humane way, but in late 2017, a video of a Feather Industries supplier leaked. In the clip, geese are seen piled on top of each other in a pen—after one bird is crushed to death, a farmer tosses its co**se over the fence. The remaining geese are packed into cramped cages and ultimately killed and plucked, and their feathers used in the jackets.
The company also lines their hood with fur from wild coyotes. Trapping methods include the "Belisle Foot Snare", which clamps down on the leg of the animal while an additional cable immobilizes them and "Duke No. 3 Rubber Jaws", which uses rubber clams to “bite” down the legs of the coyote and trap them to starve until they are found and killed. Some coyotes try to chew off the trap, but wind up gnawing off a numb leg or foot instead. Dozens of countries, including the whole of the EU, have banned the use of these traps. We, the members of Cornell Vegan Society, believe that there is no humane way to murder or cause someone pain. Thus, we use our voices and words to educate others on the issue, and hope that you can stand with us against the suffering of others. If you are looking for cruelty free alternatives for vegan jackets, we recommend and and have down and fur free options!

Many thanks to Julia Feliz Brueck for taking time out of their schedule to come speak to us about consistent anti-oppression this past Thursday! Their book, Veganism In An Oppressive World, unites many voices of vegans of color to offer guidelines for how to take a consistent anti-oppression stance with veganism and explains how to avoid even unintentional tokenism, exploitation, and oppression in the movement. For anyone interested in the book it is available on Amazon and more information about Julia’s work can be found at http://www.veganismofcolor.com !
