Carrera Bioscience’s owner, Kathie Berghorn, passed away in 2020. Kathie’s brilliance, creativity and drive was Carrera. The company has closed its doors. Sadly, projects that were near and dear to Kathie are left in archive. Her positive attitude and perseverance is captured in an excerpt from the forward of her doctoral thesis,
“The sky is the limit . . . or is it?”

In September, Carrera Bioscience Inc. was selected to participate as a member of the 2018-2019 Cohort of the NIH SBIR/STTR Commercialization Accelerator Program (CAP) for Phase II awardee for the commercialization of the Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Diagnostics for all of the hepatitis viruses – A, B, C, D and E.

Carrera attended the NIH CAP Commercialization Training Workshop in Los Angeles in October.

Our goal is to make this assay available worldwide!

In September, Carrera Bioscience presented a poster at the Luminex xMAP Connect 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. Although travelers’ diarrhea usually resolves within three to five days, 10% of illnesses persist longer than one week. The poster detailed the Enteric Antibody Panel that Carrera Bioscience successfully developed for 7 individual immunoassays to detect antibodies to enteric pathogens utilizing Luminex carboxylated Magplex microspheres. These enteric pathogens include enterotoxigenic Escherichia. coli (ETEC), Shigella flexneri, Shigella sonnei, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Norovirus GI.1 and Norovirus GII.4. These assays were next merged into a single multiplex assay, where one well with one human serum sample, diluted 1:1000, has the capability to detect multiple enteric antibodies.

In June, Carrera Bioscience presented a poster summarizing their work on the development of Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Diagnostics for all of the hepatitis viruses – A, B, C, D and E. This is a patent pending assay. It was well-received by the medical personnel attending the meeting. They were amazed about the small sample size required for detection.
