Starting March 1st, 2021, the Tompkins County Recycling and Solid Waste Center will be operated under a new contract with Casella Recycling. Changes under the new contract include:

Plastic Bags and Films will no longer be accepted for recycling. Clean and dry plastic bags and films can be brought to retail store take back locations for recycling. New York State law requires retail stores to accept a list of clean and dry plastic bags and films for recycling, see: https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/50042.html

Fluorescent Light Bulbs and Tubes from residents will now only be accepted during Household Hazardous Waste drop off events (see: https://recycletompkins.org/other-programs-and-services/household-hazardous-waste/). Permits and appointments are required to attend Household Hazardous Waste drop off events. Fluorescent light bulbs and tubes can also be recycled through store take back programs.

These changes are opportunities to reduce costs of operations while still providing needed services by streamlining operations and directing residents to available alternatives. Tompkins County continues to be a forward-thinking community in regards to sustainable waste management.

Cat food needed! We need to restock our pet food pantry, and are hoping for your help. Every Saturday, we provide members of the community in need with emergency food supplies to help them care for their pets, and give food to caretakers of feral cat colonies. It means we go through a lot of cat food! Here are three ways you can get food to us, so we can help our fellow cat-lovers:

1. Ship it! Here’s a handy Amazon link https://www.amazon.com/Purina-Friskies-Delights-Chicken-Flavors/dp/B07D9XW3KF/ but feel free to buy whatever brand from whichever retailer you prefer. The shelter’s address is 1640 Hanshaw Rd. Ithaca NY 14850
2. Drop it off! If you can grab an extra bag of cat food during your next shopping trip, you can set it down outside the doors of either building at any time. If the weather is bad, bring it to our Intake Building, which is more sheltered and has a vestibule you can leave it in.
3. Give us your cat’s leftovers! Got a picky eater? We’ll take that random half-a-bag that your cat won’t finish! Please tape it shut and write the approximate date that it was opened so we can make sure we use it before it gets stale.
