Today is , commemorating the “Father of Independent Living” on his birthday.

Ed was a close friend and collaborator of Judy’s. On this day in 2023, Judy wrote:

“Ed is known by many as the ‘Father of the Independent Living Movement’ and I’m often called the ‘Mother of the Independent Living Movement.’ Together, we were instrumental in advancing Centers for Independent Living across the United States. We were able to influence and develop policy at federal, state, and local levels with a mission to achieve the full inclusion of people with disabilities throughout all facets of our society.“

Should I Do That?: Decision-Making Skill Building for Students with Disabilities
Date/Time: February 11, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
Description: Good decision-making skills are essential for a successful life as an adult. Too often, students with disabilities are not given strategic instruction and opportunities to practice and develop decision-making skills resulting in less independence and greater vulnerability as adults. In this webinar for parents, school professionals, service providers, and students, we will learn about the importance of decision-making skills and strategies for teaching children and youth with disabilities how to develop these skills. We will also learn about New York’s new Supported Decision-Making law and program as an alternative to guardianship for young adults.
Learning objectives:
Understand the importance of good decision-making skills for students with developmental and emotional disabilities
Learn practical ways to develop decision-making skills at school and home for students of all ages
Understand what Supported Decision-Making is and how it works
Foster self-determination and sound decision-making in adulthood.
Presenters:
Gina Riley, Ph.D, Assoc. Prof. of Special Education, CUNY – Hunter College
Christoper Lyons, CEO, AIM Services, Inc., New York’s Supported Decision-Making Program

Lap desks and hospital tables are great for individuals with limited mobility, particularly those who are bedbound. They are great for propping up books or computers or for putting foods and drinks on a flat surface. We have a variety of styles. Come see what we have!
