Melanoma May is almost over, but sun safety never really ends!

A medical statistic that catches a lot of people by surprise is how easily UV damage adds up. Having just five or more sunburns in your lifetime actually doubles your risk of developing melanoma. It doesn't take a lifetime of zero sunscreen to cause real damage. Just five bad burns, and honestly, it only takes one severe, sunburn early on to set you up for melanoma later in life.

The good news is that keeping your skin safe is incredibly simple. Daily sunscreen matters even on cloudy days. Wearing a hat when you are outside and finding some shade when the sun is at its strongest makes a massive difference. Truly, the best skincare routine in the world always starts with sun protection. Everything else is just secondary maintenance.

Elizabeth Thompson encourages everyone to keep a close watch on their skin year-round. It helps to use the buddy system at home to check those tricky spots you can't reach, like your scalp or your back. If you don't have a buddy to help search those hidden areas, Elizabeth is always happy to be your buddy and take a look for you. It is always best to get any questionable spots checked the moment you notice them.

While the clinic offers skin evaluations all year long, Elizabeth is conducting full-body skin assessments for a flat $75 cash pay rate through the end of the month. Standard insurance is also gladly accepted, with rates varying by plan.

As summer arrives here in Northeast Mississippi, the team wants to encourage the community to stay safe and wear your sunscreen!

Dr. Doodles officially pulled the X-ray files for this week's health update! 🦴

The team at Segars Clinic frequently runs into a common misconception when talking to patients about bone health. Many people assume that if their bones feel strong, their risk of an unexpected fracture is zero.

As it turns out, true bone strength is about much more than just a density score on a chart.

Our hormones act like a quiet protective shield for our skeletal framework. Estrogen plays a massive role in helping the body hold onto bone density. When those hormone levels begin to drop in our 30s and 40s, bones can lose their structural strength out of nowhere, even if someone stays highly active and feels completely fine on the outside.

Everyday factors like gut health, natural aging, and even certain routine medications also heavily impact how much calcium and vitamin D your body actually absorbs.

The great news is that a standard bone density test is not just about hunting for existing damage. It is a quick, completely painless screening designed to show patients exactly where their baseline stands today. This gives them a clear plan to protect their mobility long before an injury ever occurs.

Elizabeth Thompson handles these quick screenings , and It takes just a few minutes to get real, data so patients can start protecting their long-term wellness.

"Why am I still in pain if nothing is broken?"

When a knee, hip, or shoulder is constantly throbbing, a temporary pill bottle rarely gets to the bottom of the problem. Usually, the real culprit is deep inflammation locked right inside the joint.

Braxton Meeks, FNP-C, uses targeted joint injections to treat the swelling right where it is happening. This approach calms the inflammation fast and restores smooth movement without forcing patients to rely on heavy oral medications or jump straight into a surgery consultation.

If you or a loved one is ready to stop just masking a joint ache and start actually addressing it, the team at Segars Clinic is here to help.

Some people just have a way of making you feel like you are in good hands the second you meet them. Kensley Smith is absolutely one of those people.

Kensley is a Nurse Assistant and has been an essential part of the Segars team for three and a half years. She handles a little bit of everything around the office, from patient intake and drawing blood to managing X-rays. If you ask her about her role, she will tell you she loves being versatile. Whatever you need during your visit, she is right there to help make it happen.

Her favorite part of working at the clinic is the bond between the co-workers, the staff, and the patients. She says it best herself: we are like family here.

When she is off the clock, Kensley stays busy outdoors raising quail, ducks, and chickens. You can usually find her gardening, fishing, or hiking. If she is picking up a bite to eat or a treat locally, her absolute favorite spot is Cream & Sugar. For her, that classic Southern hospitality is the best thing about living and working in Northeast Mississippi.

She describes Segars Clinic in three words: Dependable. Diligent. Attentive. We definitely agree with her.

The clinic had a special visitor drop by the office this week to share a few updates from the track.

Austin Vaughn, a 17-year-old Burnsville native and NASCAR ARCA Menards Series driver, stopped in to visit the our team between his upcoming races. Austin took home the Rookie of the Year title last season, and The Segars Clinic is proud to be officially on board as a sponsor for his journey on the circuit.

Supporting Austin on a national stage is incredibly exciting, but the best part is simply getting behind a young person from our own backyard who is working hard and representing Tishomingo County so well. The entire clinic family is rooting for him this season.

Go support Austin and give him a follow at to keep up with his upcoming track schedule and race results. We are so proud of you Austin!

Melanoma doesn't have to just be in areas the sun touches. It can show up in places that have spent your entire life completely covered up, like the soles of your feet, under your fingernails, and deep in your scalp.

Because we don't think to look there, these hidden spots are the easiest to miss. That is why we highly recommend the buddy system.

Ask your spouse, a family member, or a friend to look at the areas you physically cannot see yourself. Have them part your hair to check your scalp, look behind your ears, and check the bottoms of your feet. If you notice a dark streak under a loved one's nail bed or a strange new spot in their hair, just point it out to them. Catching those hidden spots early is what matters most.

Of course, the absolute safest option is to have a professional team map your skin. Elizabeth Thompson is our resident DermaSensor specialist here in Iuka. She uses advanced, cell-level scanning technology to check all of those tricky, hidden surfaces so you don't have to guess or miss a thing.

For the rest of May, we are running full-body skin assessments for a flat $75 cash pay rate. We also accept standard insurance plans. Take a look at those hidden spots tonight, and if anything seems unusual, we are right here to give you answers.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, and yes, we call it liquid gold around the clinic for a reason.

The process is pretty straightforward. We draw a small amount of your blood and spin it down to isolate your body's own natural growth factors. Then we combine that with traditional microneedling. The needles create tiny channels in the skin so the PRP absorbs deeply and gets to work faster. This triggers a massive jump in your natural collagen stimulation, up to 400% more than standard needling. It helps smooth out texture, fade stubborn acne scars, correct melasma, and bring back that firm, bouncy feel.

Also, I bet you didn't know that we start losing about 1% of our collagen every single year after age 25. By the time you reach your 30s and 40s, your skin's structural foundation is already breaking down. PRP microneedling is one of the most effective ways to build it back up before those changes become permanent.

This is a true medical-grade treatment performed by providers who understand your skin at a cellular level.

If you want to see if this fits your specific skin goals, call Segars Clinic Beauty at 662-423-1000. We are located right here in Iuka, MS, or you can check out more details at segarscliniccare.com.

The part about your bones not warning you, that is the terrifying part about bone loss: it does not hurt. It does not announce itself with a warning ache. Most women only find out they have significant bone loss after a fracture happens from a minor fall that should not have been serious.

The early signs of a fading foundation are incredibly subtle and rarely feel like a structural density issue.

You might notice yourself losing height gradually over the years or realize your posture has shifted without explanation. You might experience chronic back or hip aches that get dismissed as just getting older, or suffer a sudden fracture from something minor, like stepping off a curb or a small bump. None of those signs scream osteoporosis to the average person, but underneath the surface, your vertebrae may already be compressing.

The biological window to actually protect your bones is in your 30s and 40s. Waiting until after a major bone breaks means you are reacting to a crisis instead of preventing one. This is especially true during perimenopause and menopause when dropping estrogen levels strip away your skeletal protection.

Elizabeth looks past the surface by running comprehensive lab profiles. She evaluates your vitamin D levels, tracks your hormone picture, checks your gut nutrient absorption, and finds exactly where your density stands right now. Let us look at your structural foundation before you are forced to react to a broken bone.

RED FLAG OR NORMAL?

Small fluctuations in your weight as your life situations change is completely NORMAL. What is a major RED FLAG is when your body changes drastically out of nowhere.

If you have not changed what you eat, you are still getting your steps in, and you are trying to stay active, but almost overnight your body keeps shifting and stacking weight around your midsection, your body is throwing a RED FLAG.

When this happens, most women immediately blame their willpower. They cut calories down to nothing and focus on extra cardio, only to watch the scale stay completely frozen. But you cannot out-diet a metabolic shift.

In your 30s and 40s, weight gain often changes location entirely. You stop gaining subcutaneous fat (the soft fat right under your skin) and your shifting hormones signal your body to deposit visceral fat instead. This is a deep, metabolic fat that wraps around your internal organs in your abdomen.

This is driven by internal biology, not a lack of discipline -
High Cortisol: Stress actively triggers deep belly fat storage.
Sluggish Thyroid: slower metabolic thermostat means you burn fewer calories.
Disrupted Hormones: Poor sleep spikes your hunger cues and locks your body into fat storage.

If your body has stopped responding to the habits that always used to work for you, it is crying out for help. You are not imagining it. You do not have to keep testing out exhausting fitness trends or wasting money guessing in the supplement aisle. Elizabeth looks past the surface numbers on the scale by testing your blood chemistry to pinpoint the exact internal blockages stalling your progress.

Is Your Skin Trying to Tell You Something?

Your glow may be hiding under dead skin. When women notice their makeup looks cakey or their skin feels heavy and congested, their first instinct is usually to spend money on a heavier moisturizer or a new foundation. But a lot of the time, the issue is not what you are putting on top of your skin. It is what your skin is failing to shed underneath.

Your skin naturally regenerates itself by pushing new cells to the surface and shedding old ones. In your twenties, this cycle takes about 28 days. As time goes on, that process slows down significantly. Instead of shedding, those dead cells stack up on the surface.

This buildup acts like dust on a mirror. Instead of reflecting light to give you a natural glow, the rough surface scatters the light, making your complexion look flat and dull. This layer also traps oil and debris in your pores, creating that heavy, congested feeling, and causes makeup to cling unevenly to dry patches.

A chemical peel does not just scrub the surface. It safely dissolves the microscopic bonds holding that old, dead cellular buildup together. By removing that barrier, it triggers your body to immediately bring fresh, healthy cells to the top. It is a biological reset that allows your skin to actually absorb your daily skincare products instead of letting them sit uselessly on a layer of dead tissue.

If your skin has lost its brightness, it might just need a clean slate to breathe again.
