Children’s Yoga Teacher Trainer / Radiant Child Yoga Level 1-3
From September until June I am employed in a public school system to provide occupational therapy (OT) services to children with life skill, motor, sensory integration, visual perception, and/or oculomotor developmental delays/challenges. I use children’s yoga as a treatment modality both in my individual and small group OT treatment sessions. Each week, I also teach children's yoga in 10 whole classrooms providing a yoga/mindfulness experience to, on average, 160 children a week.
During the summer months, I like to share my knowledge of how to teach yoga to children by providing workshops to teachers, parents, librarians, paraeducators, therapists, childcare providers and really anyone who has a desire to learn these skills and share them with the children in their lives.
The particular ‘method’ of children’s yoga I teach is Radiant Child Yoga (RCY) which was developed by Shakta Khalsa, a pioneer in the field of children’s yoga, and one who has been teaching children yoga for over 40 years. As a Lead Trainer for Radiant Child Yoga, I am certified to teach RCY Levels 1-2 (3 days), and RCY Level 3 (1 day) workshops. I typically lead RCY trainings druing the months of July and August.
I view yoga and mindfulness as a life skill which fits in perfectly with my occupational therapy background. When ‘occupation’ is defined as ‘how one occupies their time’, which is the historical basis of occupational therapy, yoga and mindfulness can be viewed as an important life skill which promotes physiological, emotional, and spiritual wellness. I would love to see yoga/mindfulness integrated into the education of all children whether at home, in our schools, and/or in our community programs. Teaching children yoga/mindfulness benefits not only the child, but also the practitioner, and their community. The rippling out positive effects of teaching just one child yoga/mindfulness is endless.
