This year, Resident Appreciation Week feels different.

In the midst of a cyberattack and more than a week without an EMR, our neurosurgery residents have met uncertainty with, teamwork, and professionalism. They’ve adapted quickly, taken on extra responsibility, and continued delivering safe, thoughtful care to our patients.

Moments like this reveal character and we are proud of what we’ve seen from our entire team. To our residents: thank you for your resilience, your leadership, and your steady presence when it matters most!

The UMMC Triage Line has been set up for calls from patients. The telephone number is 601-815-0000. For medical emergencies, call 911.

Requests for time-sensitive needs, such as medication refills or postoperative care visits, will be prioritized.

What to expect when you call

Please speak clearly when prompted to provide your name, callback number, date of birth, who you are trying to reach and your reason for calling. People calling for prescription refills should have on hand the medication name and dosage, plus the name, address and telephone number of their pharmacy.

About the call back

Messages will be routed to the appropriate person for a return phone call, in as timely a manner as possible. Please be aware your return call may be from a non-UMMC number. Return calls may be delayed as we anticipate a high volume of calls daily from across the state.

Please do not call multiple times. Repeated calls will slow our ability to respond.

We apologize for this interruption of our services. Teams are working around the clock to restore full operations and help as many people as quickly as we possibly can.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Today we had the honor of hosting Dr. Daniel Hoh from UF College of Medicine. Dr. Hoh shared his expertise in complex spine surgery with our residents and faculty, sparking thoughtful discussion and learning.

Thank you, Dr. Hoh for taking the time to visit our department, support the training of future neurosurgeons, and reconnect with past trainees!

🎄 Last year, Raymond and Beverly Sinele’s holiday plans took a wild turn. 😮 What started as a quiet retirement getaway in matching Christmas pajamas became an urgent trip home for surgery at UMMC.

This year? They’re celebrating Christmas with family and extra gratitude for everyone who helped them get there. ✨ Here’s hoping it’s full of holiday cheer and without another 3-day PJ marathon!
❤❤👀👀

👓🎄 We’re proud to outfit our interns with their own custom-fit surgical loupes each year, a gift meant to help set them up for success as they step into neurosurgery training. This year, they arrived just in time for Christmas! 🎁

Surgical loupes offer precise magnification of the operative field, helping surgeons reduce eye strain, maintain better posture, and stay focused during long, complex procedures. 🧠 👀

A Christmas tree may make a better photo-op than a lecture hall, but our Pediatric Neurosurgery team is hard at work at the AANS 2025 Joint Pediatric Section Annual Meeting! They're attending sessions, sharing ideas, and catching up with colleagues from across the country, including former resident Dr. Ben Carroll.

We’re proud to see our team learning, leading, and bringing the latest in pediatric neurosurgical care back home to Mississippi. 💙🧠

We’re proud to share that members of our research team recently presented their latest work at the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting in San Diego — an international gathering of more than 28,000 scientists advancing brain and spinal cord research.

Allegra Latimer (medical student), Bryan Sullivan (graduate student), Boba Stokic (Methodist Rehabilitation Center ), and Dr. Matthias Krenn (UMMC Neurosurgery) highlighted new insights in neuromodulation, including efforts to improve motor recovery and reduce spasticity for people living with spinal cord injury.

It was a valuable chance to connect with experts across neuroscience, exchange ideas, and highlight the collaborative efforts behind our work in spinal cord injury care.

🎉 Happy National Nurse Practitioner Week! 🎉

This week, we’re proud to celebrate the NPs who power our neurosurgery team — guiding patients through clinic visits, hospital care, and recovery with skill, compassion, and steady support.

Thank you for the care you provide and the heart you bring to every patient’s experience. We appreciate you more than you know! 💙

From the operating room to the lecture hall — Dr. Joaquín Hidalgo shared his expertise this week as a guest speaker at the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds.

His talk covered a practical and important topic: how and when to refer patients to neurosurgery, including what workup can be initiated in the primary care setting to help referrals move smoothly.

We value opportunities to connect with providers across Mississippi to support coordinated, patient-centered care. Thank you UMMC Department of Medicine for the invitation and collaboration. 💙
