Poison ivy, oak and sumac can leave kids with an itchy, uncomfortable rash that may last for weeks. The good news: reactions aren’t contagious, but the oil that causes them can spread if it’s not washed off right away. Healthy Children, the American Academy of Pediatrics parenting website, shares how to prevent, treat and soothe these rashes at home — and when to call your pediatrician. https://www.healthychildren.org/English/health-issues/conditions/skin/Pages/Poison-Ivy-Treatment.aspx

Mary Claire • Age 6 • Vicksburg, MS

Before birth, Mary Claire was diagnosed with a gastrointestinal condition requiring surgery so Children’s of Mississippi was her home for the first 90 days of her life. Later, doctors discovered ulcers, which led to more surgery. Then, just two weeks after beginning kindergarten, she was hit with the hardest diagnosis yet — leukemia.

Mary Claire has been a brave girl through it all and even organized a toy drive for Children’s of Mississippi. She collected over 650 toys for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Mississippi, the state’s only cancer clinic for children! Thankfully, Mary Claire is now in remission. Being treated close to home has made all the difference for Mary Claire and her entire family. 🌈
