UMMC recently received an $11.9 million grant to establish the Balance and Auditory Research Center. The Department of Otolarynology faculty including one of our audiologists, Chris Spankovich, have worked very hard to obtain this funding. We’re excited to see what research comes out of the BARC lab!

With a new $11.9 million grant from the NIH, UMMC is creating the Balance and Auditory Research Center. The new center will advance discoveries to improve diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation in hearing and balance disorders.

This week is Balance Awareness Week! Did you know that the inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance? There are many causes for dizziness, but your inner ear may be the culprit. The annual Babies with Books Read-a-thon, when NICU caregivers and babies’ families team up to boost infants’ development with reading, is set for Sept. 8-18.
As part of the event, each NICU family will receive books to start their baby’s library. Children’s of Mississippi supporters can replenish the book supply through an Amazon wish list with titles in English and Spanish (available here: https://amzn.to/45Tn1Nc)

Last year, Children’s of Mississippi placed in the top 10 overall and first in its division. The friendly competition among NICUs around the world had 224 participating, with 61,054 story times shared over 11 days. So far, about 250 NICUs in half a dozen countries have signed up to compete this year.

In 2023, Children’s of Mississippi ranked in the top 20 and third in its division, with 2,767 reading sessions. The reading rate in the NICUs more than doubled in 2024, with 5,704 reading sessions. 🌈
