MISTLETOE MADNESS
Mistletoe is a popular Christmas and NYE decoration. However, it is a parasitic plant plant that can be very damaging to trees.
The mistletoe uses the tree as a host for carbohydrates, nutrients and water.
When a heavy infestation occurs it can be detrimental to the health of the tree. It can decrease the energy production of the tree and create an overall decline in heath leading to premature death of the tree.
Since mistletoe is an evergreen now is the perfect time to check the health of your trees since most of leaf season is over.
According to the Georgia Arborist Association Tree risk management is an ongoing responsibility for all tree owners, not only for one’s personal property, but for potential damage to adjacent properties and public infrastructure.
What about my neighbors’ trees?
Well, they are your neighbors’ trees, and the responsibility to knowledgeably manage those trees rests with your neighbors. Also, and depending upon many different legal issues, branches that hang over the property line may be yours to do with as you wish, as long as any pruning or removals conform with arboricultural standards.
The GFC encourages neighbors to discuss tree issues long before tree failure becomes a problem and responsibility for any damage becomes part of the discussion. Should your neighbor be unresponsive to your concerns it is advised that you seek legal advice about your options.
