I have dedicated my career to the Jackson Public Schools Child Nutrition Department for 43 years. I began my journey in 1983 as a Food Service Assistant, where I learned the importance of serving nutritious meals to children with care, dignity, and excellence. In 1985, I was promoted to Child Nutrition Manager at Van Winkle Elementary School, making history as the first Black male manager in the district.

In 2000, I transferred to Bailey High School, and in 2002, I moved to Peeples Middle School, where I am still proudly serving today. Throughout my career, I have trained and mentored many individuals, several of whom have gone on to become successful managers. Those I have had the privilege to mentor include Lisa Hatten-Moore, Kelly Powell, Melanie Ragsdale, and my oldest son, Algernon Fairley.

Seeing children happy and smiling each day because they have received a warm, nutritious, and well-prepared meal brings me great joy. Serving children, developing future leaders, and making a lasting impact through Child Nutrition is not just my career—it is my purpose and my legacy.

I serve JPS Child Nutrition because school lunch is vital to student success. It provides essential nutrition, boosts academic performance, improves health, increases attendance, supports cognitive development, fosters social skills, reduces food insecurity, enhances behavior, and offers a reliable, affordable meal for many children. School nutrition is truly a cornerstone of student well-being and educational success.

For more than 21 years in Child Nutrition, I have had the privilege of serving the children in the community where I live. Being able to make a difference in my own community is deeply fulfilling. Good nutrition positively influences mood, attitude, and enthusiasm while reducing stress and anxiety.

My staff and I absolutely love preparing and serving meals for our scholars. Seeing their smiles and excitement as they enter the cafeteria reminds us every day that the love and passion we put into our work truly makes a difference. Feeding souls, one scholar at a time!

I came to Child Nutrition 20 years ago with the mindset of providing scholars with healthy, nutritious meals in a clean and safe environment. I have worked consistently toward that goal by encouraging staff to deliver the best service possible, ensuring that each scholar’s breakfast and lunch experience is both enjoyable and nourishing.

I am proud to serve the Jackson Public School District through JPS Child Nutrition because this work is far more than a job to me—it is truly a calling. For more than 18 years, I have poured my time, energy, and heart into ensuring that every child who enters our cafeterias is met with nutritious, appealing meals prepared and served with care, consistency, and love.

Throughout my journey with JPS Child Nutrition, I have worn many hats. I currently serve as the Child Nutrition Satellite Manager at Provine High School and as the concessions manager during football and track seasons. In addition, I am an Instructor for Child Nutrition Cooks Training, where I take great pride in educating, mentoring, and preparing staff to meet district standards while serving our scholars with excellence. I also willingly take on additional responsibilities as needed, always working in support of the greater mission of Child Nutrition.

What continues to drive me is a simple yet powerful belief: “Let no child go hungry.” I understand that what children eat affects more than their physical health—it impacts their focus, confidence, and ability to learn. For this reason, I am deeply committed to ensuring meals are not only healthy, but also flavorful and visually inviting, so students feel welcomed, valued, and excited to eat.

I genuinely love what I do, and that love is reflected in the way I support my staff and uplift those around me. I believe strong leadership is rooted in compassion, teamwork, and consistency. I give my best every day because our children—and the people who serve them—deserve to feel valued and supported.

Being able to nourish our scholars, strengthen my team, and contribute to their daily success is what keeps me committed year after year. This work allows me to make a difference where it truly matters, and that is what gives it meaning.

For the past 18 years, I have dedicated my career to JPS Child Nutrition because feeding our children is more than just a job to me—it is my life’s passion. I truly believe we are fueling the future of Jackson, and I take immense pride in ensuring that every student who walks into our cafeteria enters a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.

I love what I do because I see the immediate difference a nutritious meal and a kind word can make in a child’s day. Beyond the kitchen, I am honored to have a positive impact on my community. Serving the families of Jackson for nearly two decades has given me the opportunity to give back to the place I call home, ensuring our children are nourished, supported, and ready to reach their full potential. My mission remains the same: to make sure no child goes hungry and that every meal we serve provides the foundation they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

I initially chose to work for JPS Child Nutrition for convenience. It allowed me to be at work while my children were in school, eliminating the need for aftercare. As the years passed and my schedule became consistent, my children grew older—and something special began to happen. More and more of their friends started calling me “Momma.” Naturally, I found myself correcting their behavior and guiding them as if they were my own.

After those students graduated and left school, I began seeing them out in the community. Many of them stopped to tell me how much of a difference I made in their lives—sometimes just by offering a simple smile or reminding them that they mattered.

Even today, I continue to reap the rewards of seeing former scholars succeed, knowing I had a small hand in helping shape their lives. That is why I love working in child nutrition.

I am proud to work for JPS Child Nutrition because this role has been more than just a job—it has been a meaningful journey. I began over 30 years ago as a substitute, uncertain of where the path would lead, but I stayed because I cared deeply about the children and believed in the mission of what was then known as JPS Food Services, now JPS Child Nutrition.

Throughout the years, I progressed from assistant to cook, and today I proudly serve as a Child Nutrition Manager. Each step along the way has strengthened my sense of responsibility, patience, and leadership. I do this work because our scholars deserve healthy meals, consistency, and someone who genuinely cares about their well-being.

Watching our scholars grow while I have grown alongside them is why I remain committed. This is not just my job—this is my purpose.
