Due to the continued operational challenges University of Mississippi Medical Center is experiencing following the recent cyberattack, we have made the decision to postpone our upcoming Tea with the Midwives event scheduled for Friday, February 27th. While we were looking forward to gathering together, our priority remains supporting patient care and navigating the current system disruptions. We will announce a new date soon and look forward to connecting with you when services are fully restored. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

The UMMC Triage Line has been set up for calls from patients. The telephone number is 601-815-0000. For medical emergencies, call 911.

Requests for time-sensitive needs, such as medication refills or postoperative care visits, will be prioritized.

What to expect when you call

Please speak clearly when prompted to provide your name, callback number, date of birth, who you are trying to reach and your reason for calling. People calling for prescription refills should have on hand the medication name and dosage, plus the name, address and telephone number of their pharmacy.

About the call back

Messages will be routed to the appropriate person for a return phone call, in as timely a manner as possible. Please be aware your return call may be from a non-UMMC number. Return calls may be delayed as we anticipate a high volume of calls daily from across the state.

Please do not call multiple times. Repeated calls will slow our ability to respond.

We apologize for this interruption of our services. Teams are working around the clock to restore full operations and help as many people as quickly as we possibly can.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

This week's midwife of the week is Dr. Janice T. Scaggs, DNP, CNM a distinguished midwife and Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. A native of Meridian, Mississippi, Dr. Scaggs has built a remarkable career devoted to advancing maternal health through compassionate, evidence-based care. She holds a BA from Salem College, a BS in Nursing from UNC Charlotte, an MSN in midwifery from East Carolina University, and a DNP from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she was inducted into the Graduate School Hall of Fame.
Dr. Scaggs’ expertise and leadership have shaped midwifery programs across the nation, with appointments at Duke University, Vanderbilt University, East Carolina University, and in the greater Atlanta area. Her presentations at the local, state, and national levels reflect her commitment to advancing women’s health, reducing unnecessary cesarean births, and promoting physiologic labor.
At UMMC, Dr. Scaggs has been instrumental in expanding midwifery education and integrating collaborative, patient-centered care throughout the health system.
“I recognize the power and strength of women and the importance of their health in the well-being of families and communities. Collaborative, evidence-based practice with the patient at the center of their care is my focus. I approach healthcare for all persons as a compassionate partner who not only listens, but who hears.”
Dr. Scaggs’ work embodies the highest standards of midwifery excellence and leadership, inspiring colleagues, students, and communities to elevate maternal and newborn health across Mississippi and beyond.

A major philanthropic gift is helping UMMC grow midwifery care when Mississippi needs it most. The Roots & Wings Foundation investment allows UMMC to expand certified nurse-midwife services and improve outcomes for women and families.
