Join the MCCTR & UMMC Office of Clinical Trials in Celebrating Clinical Trials Day – Tuesday, May 20!

Clinical Trials Day, observed each year on May 20, is a joyful opportunity to pause in recognition and admiration of the life-changing work made possible through clinical trials — and the people who make them happen.

At the heart of every medical breakthrough are clinical research professionals driven by a powerful purpose: advancing treatments that improve and save lives. These dedicated teams are integral in moving new therapies from scientific discovery to clinical application. But none of it would be possible without the courage and generosity of patient-participants who partner in research to pave the way for future care.

UMMC leads Mississippi in clinical research excellence. With over 200 active trials and $110 million in research funding, our researchers are pushing the boundaries of medicine and innovation. From cancer therapies to COVID-19 studies, our mission is to bring tomorrow’s treatments to patients today.

Join us in the Main Hospital Atrium on Tuesday, May 20, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Stop by the Clinical Trials Day table for snacks, resources, and information about current trial opportunities. Learn how clinical trials support patients, drive physician-scientist discovery, and improve care across Mississippi and beyond.

Today we had the pleasure of attending the ceremony honoring Jamie Brown as a nurse leader nominee for The DAISY Award. The DAISY award is an international recognition program that celebrates the extraordinary compassion and kindness of nurses.

Jamie Brown (pictured right) never fails to show kindness to anyone she encounters and makes our participants feel safe and welcomed when attending visits on our Clinical Research and Trials Unit. As a leader, she values her employees and makes sure they are all equipped to acheive success. Going above and beyond for her particiapnts and employees more than qualifies her for this nomination.

We in the Clinical Research Support Program are proud of the work we do to advance healthcare and make Mississippi healthier. In addition to Cathy Hudgins, our team is led by Jamie Brown who works diligently to make sure we are equipped with the tools we need to succeed, and her contributions often go unnoticed. Check out this article to get a little inside look at some of the work we do: https://www.umc.edu/news/News_Articles/2024/08/Clinical-Research.html?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR1usn5jFJxVh7RmIb13h-hyhHrwxnp8vjVLLyCjONCbdADnYipMbCcO74w_aem_NWlCWFHddSkPhey4MRLgaA

Medical science’s greatest advances are often the result of clinical trials meticulously organized on the front end by an often anonymous support staff. Those roles are often just as vital to successful patient outcomes as the names on printed publications.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and the University of Mississippi Medical Center present the Spirulina Oral Supplement for Enhancing Host Resilience to Virus Infection study to learn how Immulina™ affects the ability to “bounce back” against the flu virus.

This study will examine the effects that Immulina, a natural supplement derived from Spirulina (a type of algae), may or may not have on natural killer cells in the blood. The study is seeking to enroll a total of 472 healthy adults ages 18 and above.
Study participants will be given either Immulina™ capsules or a placebo and will be asked to take 2 capsules each morning and 2 capsules each evening. There are 12 study visits over about 5 months with blood collected via venipuncture at each visit. Study visits will take place on the UMMC 7th floor Clinical Research and Trials unit.

Compensation is provided for completed study visits.

Do you have Long COVID?
You may be eligible for a research study.
• Researchers are studying possible treatments for adults who have Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) symptoms related to Long COVID.
• POTS causes a number of autonomic dysfunction symptoms like fast heart rate, dizziness, and fatigue when standing up from sitting or lying down.
• We want to learn if a study drug and lifestyle changes can improve daily functioning for people with ongoing symptoms after a covid infection.

With your help, we can better understand Long COVID.

**No health insurance is required
** Participants will be paid for their time.
