Collaboration across specialties leads to better patient care. 💙

Last week, our department hosted a Lunch & Learn for APPs focused on building connections and learning more about the resources and specialty services available across UMMC. Each speaker discussed their role, when referrals may be appropriate, and how collaborative care helps improve patient outcomes.

This session highlighted Cancer Center care and stroke prevention, bringing together experts from multiple specialties to share their knowledge and expertise.

At UMMC, a team of surgeons took on a case others called impossible and gave one patient her smile back.

After surviving oral cancer and years without teeth, Dawn Hoge found hope through a groundbreaking, first-of-its-kind procedure in Mississippi. Led by Dr. Ignacio Velasco and Dr. Laura Humphries, the team combined complex reconstruction with advanced 3D technology to perform the state’s first bi-maxillary implant using a fully customized system.

The result? She walked into surgery without teeth and woke up with a smile!

Stories like Dawn’s are a powerful reminder of what’s possible when innovation and collaboration come together to change lives.
