University Transplant at University of Mississippi Medical Center

University Transplant at University of Mississippi Medical Center Updates, news, support, and patient education related to organ transplants from University of Missis Easy access to care for our patients is important to us.

University Transplant, a part of University of Mississippi Medical Center, has a long history of solid organ transplantation beginning with the first-ever lung and heart transplants, performed by Dr. James Hardy in 1963-64 at UMMC. Dr. Hardy proved that transplanted lungs would breathe and a transplanted heart would beat in their new recipients. In 2007, the kidney and heart transplant programs joined as University Transplant, the only transplant program in the state. Currently, adult and pediatric heart and kidney transplants, as well as adult liver and pancreas transplants, are performed at UMMC. Patients in need of a transplant no longer have to travel out of the state to receive treatment. Evaluation, surgery and follow-up are offered through University Transplant. The specialized care team of experienced transplant surgeons, hepatologists, nephrologists, and advanced heart failure cardiologists focuses on personalized family-centered care. For patients who live more than one hour from Jackson, we provide evaluation services and immediate post-transplant care in Grenada and Gulfport.

The UMMC Triage Line has been set up for calls from patients. The telephone number is 601-815-0000. For medical emergencies, call 911.

Requests for time-sensitive needs, such as medication refills or postoperative care visits, will be prioritized.

What to expect when you call

Please speak clearly when prompted to provide your name, callback number, date of birth, who you are trying to reach and your reason for calling. People calling for prescription refills should have on hand the medication name and dosage, plus the name, address and telephone number of their pharmacy.

About the call back

Messages will be routed to the appropriate person for a return phone call, in as timely a manner as possible. Please be aware your return call may be from a non-UMMC number. Return calls may be delayed as we anticipate a high volume of calls daily from across the state.

Please do not call multiple times. Repeated calls will slow our ability to respond.

We apologize for this interruption of our services. Teams are working around the clock to restore full operations and help as many people as quickly as we possibly can.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Dr. Praise Matemavi specializes in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation at The University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she witnesses every day how organ donation transforms loss into life. Dr. Matemavi is especially passionate about addressing the disparities in donation and transplantation that impact Black communities. By building trust, increasing awareness, and empowering individuals and families to make informed, lifesaving decisions, she helps families understand that donation is a legacy of generosity and hope. 💙💚 Thank you to the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation and Donate Life Mississippi for sharing this story with us!

Join us at Duling Hall in Jackson, MS for the world premiere of our new documentary, Clear the List!

Friday, April 4th, 6:30 PM – 8:45 PM CDT

From October 2023 to February 2025, we had the incredible opportunity to follow the stories of transplant recipients and donors whose lives were forever changed through a historic kidney transplant paired exchange at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Through this documentary, we hope to increase awareness about kidney disease as well as the urgent need for living kidney donors - and most of all, to "clear the list" of those waiting for life-saving transplants. The root of this story began in 2019 when co-director Ashley Chisholm received a kidney transplant herself thanks to her father-in-law, Dr. Roy Chisholm. Having an intimate knowledge of this process, we felt God calling us to produce a documentary with the amazing help of the same surgeons who performed Ashley & Roy's surgeries, Dr. Praise Matemavi & Dr. Felicitas Koller. We are extremely grateful to everyone at UMMC and all of the people who graciously allowed us to film their journeys. Our prayer is that these stories will go on to help many others walking the same path.

The premiere event is free and open to all! If you would like to make a donation, your contribution will help us share this important story with a wider audience and further our Clear the List mission through future projects. Thank you for your support!

Follow the journey of transplant recipients, donors, and surgeons as they make history for the state of Mississippi.
