Now that OPEM is over, our interns are finally in the department! Time to introduce them 👏🏼

First up is Cade Holland!

Cade is from Brandon, MS. He went to Mississippi College for undergrad and UMMC for med school. He loves reading, running, and spending time with family and friends—especially his daughter, Mia. He’s most excited to finally live out his dream of helping people every day.

🎵His walkout song? Use Me by Bill Withers.

We’re so excited you’re sticking around, Cade!

And just like that, OPEM is over for our new interns! For the last 4 weeks, they’ve spent countless hours in lectures, simulation labs, procedure labs, ACLS/BLS/PALS/ATLS certifications, and more.

We are so proud of all the hard work they’ve put in this last month, and we can’t wait to have them in the department soon!

Strong work, y’all! 💪🏼

Today was a great day for many reasons - our interns are here and started OPEM, our PGY-2s & 3s advanced their ranks, and we worked our first OB-GYN Emergency Room shifts!

It’s going to be a great year here at UMMC!

🌟 Senior Spotlight 🌟

The ED will have a lot less laughter & hugs with the graduation of this one… Dr. Katelyn Sanders!

She and her husband Dr. Blake Sanders are both headed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, GA!

“The most important thing I learned in residency is to know your limits and set expectations from your first interaction. I’m a people pleaser so it was hard for me to accept that I can’t do or fix everything for every patient. We sacrifice ourselves for years to become doctors, but I wasn’t good at my job until I realized that I am a better provider to every patient when I prioritize my time for the next sick patient to walk in the door.”

We will miss you, your hugs, your laugh, and your snack deliveries on shift, Dr. Sanders!

Thankfully, another face that’s not going too far!

Dr. Joe Pongetti will start his Interventional Pain Management Fellowship here at UMMC after graduation, so we’ll still see him around!

He offered some wise words: “If you work at getting better, chances are you’ll get better. Just keep swimming.” Couldn’t agree more!

He’s looking forward to “seeing my friends spread their wings as full-blown ED docs and save some lives!”

Congrats, Dr. Pongetti! Be sure so share all the new nerve block knowledge you gain! 💉

The next face we’re sad to see go is Dr. Mary Glenn Waldrop!

Next year, she’ll be at working at Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, AL.

Her advice to residents? Always keep a growth mindset!

Dr. Waldrop says that she’s “looking forward to continuing to improve as a physician as well as to serving the Birmingham community.”

Best of luck, Mary Glenn! We’ll miss you!

Next up is Dr. Lydia MacNealy!

She’s not going too far: she will soon be working as an attending at Merit River Region in Vicksburg, MS. That will be her main gig, but she’ll also spend some time at Merit River Oaks and UMMC Adult & Peds EDs!

“The most important thing I learned in residency is to stay grounded in humility and adaptability. Emergency Medicine teaches you quickly that you’ll never have all the answers, but you must keep showing up, thinking critically, and advocating for every patient—no matter the circumstances. Never let the chaos shake your core. Stay curious, stay kind, and remember that listening is sometimes more powerful than anything you can order or prescribe.” Wise words, Dr. MacNealy!

In the next stage of her career, she’s “looking forward to finding a better rhythm between work and life—caring for patients while also being fully present for the little one who calls me Mama. It feels like the start of something really meaningful, both at home and in my career.”

Congrats, Lydia! We’re so proud of you!

Up next in the lineup for the 🌟 Senior Spotlight 🌟 is Chief Nathan Rhodes!

In just a few short weeks, Dr. Rhodes will be headed to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA.

He says, “the most important thing UMMC has taught me is how to care for and feel comfortable with resuscitating critical patients.” We certainly agree with you there!

Dr. Rhodes also says that he’s looking forward to continuing to learn and grow as a physician. We’ll miss you at the U, but your patients in LA will be lucky to have you! 👏🏼

Our second 🌟 Senior Spotlight 🌟 thankfully also doesn’t involve too much of a ‘goodbye’ 👏🏼

Dr. Gabby Snyder will also be staying on as an attending here at UMMC! We’re so happy she’s sticking around.

She says the biggest thing she learned in residency was to “trust yourself but know when to ask for help when you need it.” She’s most excited to keep working with her fav residents!!

Stoked we aren’t losing you, Dr. Snyder!

We all know what June means… almost time to say goodbye to our seniors! Time to rollout some 🌟 Senior Spotlights! 🌟

First up is Dr. Amanda Huffman!

We don’t *really* have to say ‘bye’ to her, because she’s staying on at UMMC as an attending 🤩

Her big takeaway from residency was to “Be kind to coworkers/nursing staff but advocate for your patients when necessary.”

She also says she can’t wait to work more with the residents!

Glad you’re staying with us, Dr. Huffman!!

Check out Dr. Fox (rising PGY-3) on this resident panel today! The topic was: “Blood, Sweat, and Tears: Staying grounded M3 year”

This panel of residents from different specialties spoke to the rising M3s about what to expect M3 year, how to transition from being an M2, and why they each chose their respective specialties.

Thanks for pouring into the next generation & for representing our specialty well, Dr. Fox! 🦊
