TEETHING IS TOUGH
Even the sweetest, most cheerful babies are going to become irritable, crying infants when they start the teething process because they are in pain and they don’t know why. It can be equally frustrating for parents when they are unable to soothe their screaming tots, but there are some time-tested and dentist approved things you can do to help teething babies. Cold is the key. Try frozen teething rings and pacifiers. If you feel these may be too hard, try a clean, cold wash cloth or compress. If the pain is persistent, use the recommended dose of baby acetaminophen (Tylenol). Once those teeth start popping up, be sure to schedule baby’s first dental appointment.
Improving the look, health, and function of your smile is our primary focus. From facial cosmetics to oral surgery, wisdom tooth extractions, implants, and facial pain treatment, we are dedicated to working with our patients toward the goal of achieving the healthiest, most attractive smiles possible. Are you curious how today’s dentistry procedures can virtually change your life? We’d be glad to tell you about the many ways we can help make your smile a dazzling one. Just call us!
P.S. Using alcohol on infants’ gums is never recommended as it can numb their throats and make swallowing difficult and possibly become a choking hazard.

SENSITIVE TEETH
Sweet treats and frozen desserts can be a delicious indulgence for many people, but for millions of others, the mere thought of biting into something cold or sugary can cause them to cringe. Even hot foods and beverages can cause major tooth pain in some people. This is due to tooth enamel that has been worn down or cracked, and there are some remedies to try to resolve the problem. First, make a dentist appointment to ensure the problem is not more serious. In addition, avoid or limit all acidic and sugary foods and beverages since they can aggravate the issue. Changing toothpaste to one designed for sensitive teeth is another option, as is using a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Everyone can benefit from preventive dental care. Experience proves it is to your advantage to take time for your oral health no matter how busy your personal or professional schedule. A few minutes spent each day on your teeth can not only help preserve good dental health, but it can also help safeguard your overall health. Our patient-friendly care includes 3-D imaging and dental sedation. Call us today for 5-star-rated personalized, comfortable dental care. We offer facial cosmetics, oral surgery, wisdom tooth extractions, implants, and facial pain treatment.
P.S. You may think that the harder you scrub your teeth the cleaner and healthier they will be, but aggressive brushing can wear away tooth enamel, leading to sensitivity and even cavities.
GOOD FOR YOUR TEETH, BAD FOR YOUR BREATH
The Keto diet can be great for oral health because it is low in sugar and simple carbohydrates (which become sugar when they are digested). Everyone knows that sugar is not good for teeth since it can cause cavities and loss of enamel. It also leads to more bacteria developing on the teeth and gums. Unfortunately, the Keto diet can also result in a problem called “keto breath,” which is bad breath caused by the new abundance of ketones being produced by the liver. Luckily, this is only temporary, and as the body adjusts and acclimates to this new wealth of ketones, the “dragon breath” should begin to subside. This usually happens within a month of starting the keto diet.
We know that it is important to you that the people who take care of your dental needs be well-informed, knowledgeable, highly skilled, and caring and compassionate. Our promise to you, then, is that our office will provide you with oral care of the highest quality, based on sound medical modalities, using the most appropriate procedures, and utilizing extremely qualified staff members. Keep on top of your oral health by calling our office. Contact us now to
schedule an oral evaluation.
P.S. Those experiencing “keto breath” from a new diet can fight it by drinking lots of water and brushing after every meal to prevent bacteria from building up.
DEALING WITH DRY MOUTH AT NIGHT
Dry mouth may seem like an easy problem to solve―just have a glass of water! However, it is not that simple, especially while you are sleeping. Since dry mouth can be a symptom of other conditions such as diabetes or Parkinson’s disease, it is best to ensure you are doing everything you can to treat the underlying cause first. If the problem persists, try cutting out spicy and acidic foods as they can exacerbate the issue. Keep your caffeine intake to the morning hours and avoid alcohol close to bedtime. Adding a cool mist humidifier to your nightstand is a good idea as well, as is using a mouthwash developed for dry mouth relief after brushing your teeth at night.

P.S. Dry mouth may not be a sign of another disease, but the result of a bad habit. Smoking is a huge contributor to the problem and quitting may resolve the issue completely.
ARE ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES REALLY BETTER?
An electric toothbrush was once an expensive luxury item, but today there are dozens of affordable models available at local supermarkets and drug stores. The question is no longer can you get one, but should you? And are they really better at cleaning teeth than a manual brush? The answer is, “yes.” Electric toothbrushes remove plaque better than manual brushes because of their oscillations and vibrations. They are also easier for people with limited mobility to use since they require less arm movement, and they have been proven particularly beneficial to those with dental appliances such as braces and partials. Many models come with built-in timers to ensure brushing continues for the right amount of time.
To give our patients the best oral care possible, we are committed to continual learning and education. Because we want our patients to feel confident knowing that we are a team of skilled clinicians, we stay informed about the latest research, new techniques and equipment, and the latest products that a dental office can offer its patients to provide state-of-the-art care. We invite you to take advantage of our commitment to the highest quality dental care by calling us for a convenient appointment.
P.S. When it comes to children, the best toothbrush is the one they are most likely to use, but electric brushes may make the chore more fun and engaging for them.
TEACHING KIDS TO BE KIND TO THEIR TEETH
Most parents know to avoid giving their children drinks like soda because of their extremely high sugar content, but even sugar-free sodas contain enough acid to eat away at the enamel on their teeth and cause cavities. Replacing powdered and other artificial juices with 100 percent real fruit juice seems like a good idea, but even those have copious amounts of sugar and natural sugar is also bad for oral health. In most cases, the best drink you can give your child is simple tap water because it usually contains fluoride. Milk is also a tooth-healthy drink because it helps strengthen enamel. Black and green teas come in a wide variety of flavors and also fight bacteria in the mouth.

P.S. Getting children to switch to tooth-friendly beverages can be difficult, so weening them off the sugar with drinks like chocolate milk and flavored seltzers may help ease the process.
TOOTH CUPPING
Dental enamel erosion can cause a number of different problems, including a rare condition called “cupping,” which creates cup-like dents and grooves in teeth. Cupped teeth are weakened and can easily develop cracks. Cupped teeth are primarily caused by acid erosion and dental bruxism (the grinding or clenching of teeth), which can be signs of dry mouth or acid reflux disease. Drinks such as fruit juices, soda, and wine can contribute to acid erosion as can acidic foods like citrus fruits. Cupped teeth can be bonded if the erosion has not reached the dentin (the layer directly under tooth enamel), but once it has, the tooth will need a composite filling or a crown to restore its structure.

P.S. Fixing a cupped tooth is only the first step in treating the problem. The underlying cause of the problem must be found in order to prevent other teeth from developing cups.
CHEW, CHEW, CHEW, IT’S THE SMART THING TO DO
A lot of thought goes into what we eat, whether it concerns improving our health, creating delicious new recipes, or recreating an old favorite. However, we rarely think about how we eat, especially not how we chew. Chewing has a tremendous impact on our oral and intestinal health. Its breaks down our food to make it easier to swallow and digest, and it increases the amount of saliva in our mouths. Saliva helps replace the minerals on our teeth and restore and maintain the mouth’s pH balance. It also helps rinse food particles from our teeth, preventing the buildup of bacteria that causes tooth decay. Slowing down and chewing longer creates more beneficial saliva.
P.S. There is no “correct” number of chews when eating. But making sure whatever we eat is completely pulverized before swallowing can improve dental health.
WHEN BRUSHING DOESN’T SEEM TO BE ENOUGH
It is understandably frustrating to find out you have a cavity even though you brush and floss your teeth diligently twice a day. Brushing, however, may not be the issue. Eating sugary, starchy foods creates enamel-eating acid in the plaque on our teeth. When enough time between these types of snacks is not allowed, a much more acidic environment is created. Brushing after every single snack or meal may not be convenient, but rinsing your mouth with water (tap water is best because it contains fluoride) can be helpful. If you are going to brush your teeth after eating, be sure to wait at least 30 minutes so the helpful minerals stored in your saliva can have time to work.
P.S. Toothpaste that contains fluoride or a fluoride rinse will help embed cavity-fighting properties in your saliva that can protect your teeth between brushings.
WHY BABY TEETH ARE IMPORTANT
Since our primary set of teeth (usually called “baby teeth”) have all fallen out by puberty, it is easy to think that they don’t really matter in terms of life-long dental health; however, that is simply not the case. Primary teeth are essentially place holders for adult teeth and their job is to guide our permanent teeth into place. When a baby tooth is lost prematurely because of tooth decay or trauma, the teeth around it can move or tilt into that open space, leaving less room for the new tooth to grow in. This can block the adult tooth or cause it to come in crooked. It also may make the process uncomfortable if not painful.
P.S. Cavities left untreated in primary teeth may cause an infection that can damage permanent teeth and alter their development.
SAVE YOUR TEETH FROM THE NIGHTLY GRIND
When patients regularly go to sleep at night feeling perfectly fine but then wake up with a headache or jaw pain, the dentist may have a solution. Tooth grinding and jaw clenching are common problems known as “bruxism,” and they can result in intense pain in the head. When left untreated, they can result in temperature sensitivity, broken fillings, and cracked teeth, which may require expensive root canals and/or crowns. While night guards are available at most drugstores, it is a good idea for patients to visit their dentists before choosing this route, since the material and shape of a guard needs to be determined by the pattern of an individual’s teeth griding.
P.S. Although sleeping with a dental appliance like a night guard may take some getting used to, eventually nights will be much more comfortable and mornings will be pain free.
FIBER CAN BE GREAT FOR YOUR TEETH
People alter their diets for heart, liver, and kidney health and for improving brain function, but we rarely think about what our diet means for our dental health. We all know tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease can be caused by sugary foods and drinks. However, few people are aware that increasing the fiber in their diet can decrease their risk of those same conditions and help them keep their teeth longer. A diet full of natural, high fiber foods can reduce the probability of tooth loss by approximately 30 percent. Since fiber rich foods usually involve more chewing, they increase the amount of saliva our mouths produce to help clean teeth and remove food stuck between them.
P.S. Because most of the oral benefits from high fiber foods happen when they are eaten, they cannot be replicated with supplemental pills or fiber drinks.
WHEN A ROOT CANAL FAILS
A root canal is often thought of as a last stage effort to prevent a complete tooth removal leaving you with a crown. However, if a root canal does not work and you start to experience pain in that tooth again, there may be one more option available before pulling the tooth. An “apicoectomy,” or root end surgery, is a surgical procedure that removes the very tip of the problem tooth’s root as well as any infected tissue. The tip is then sealed off with a small filling, similar to a cavity. Unlike a root canal or tooth extraction, this procedure usually requires a few small stitches to close the gum and avoid possible infection.
P.S. An apicoectomy can be accompanied by bone grafting to help the bone grow back if too large a void is left after the procedure.
IMPROVING A GUMMY SMILE
Sometimes genetics can leave individuals with smiles they feel don’t exactly suit them. For some that may mean a grin that shows more pink gums than pearly whites, a condition known as “gingival display.” When this is the case, a crown lengthening procedure may be the solution to the problem. The process reshapes the gums at the base of the teeth, removing small amounts of excess gum tissue to expose more tooth area. If there is not enough area available, crowns or veneers can be placed. Although full recovery takes approximately three months, normal activities can resume within a day or so, and soft food limitations are only required until any sutures dissolve.
Improving the look, health, and function of your smile is our primary focus. From facial cosmetics to oral surgery, wisdom tooth extractions, implants, and facial pain treatment, we are dedicated to working with our patients toward the goal of achieving the healthiest, most attractive smiles possible. P.S. Crown lengthening can help restore teeth damaged by severe decay.
A SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR GAPPED TEETH
Gaps between teeth are fairly common, and for most people they are not worth the time, expense, and discomfort involved in getting braces or aligners. However, there is another option available for those with a gap they are unhappy with. Although dental bonding is often used to fix or conceal minor discoloration, cracks, or chips in teeth, it can also be used to fill in small gaps between teeth to create a more even smile. After a thorough cleaning and assessment of the problem area, bonding material is applied to the side of one tooth and then shaped to look natural and uniform with the rest of the teeth. Finally, it is hardened with a special light tool.
P.S. While dental bonding material is not as strong as natural teeth, it is less likely to chip than fillings, crowns, or veneers, making it optimal for filling gaps.
WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL
Having wisdom teeth removed seems almost to be a rite of passage, but it is not always necessary. For some people, this third set of molars arrives in the back of the mouth healthy and with plenty of space to grow. However, wisdom teeth sometimes do not have enough room to grow properly, which can cause crowding which pushes the other teeth out of place. For some patients, the third molars grow in crooked, which can lead to cysts, tumors, and gum disease. In most cases, a dental visit will expose any potential problems with the development of wisdom teeth and they can be removed before they cause any issues or symptoms.
P.S. Wisdom teeth are usually removed in a patient’s late teens because the tooth roots have not fully formed and they are easier to extrac
A BETTER WAY TO HEAL AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTIONS
Thanks to modern anesthesia, the process of extracting a bad tooth is completely painless—it is now recovery that can sometimes cause discomfort. However, thanks to platelet rich plasma (or “PRP” therapy), healing times for tooth extractions are much shorter than they used to be. During the unassisted healing process, the body sends blood platelets to the wounded area to initiate healing. PRP therapy takes the patient’s blood and puts it through a centrifuge machine, creating a concentration of platelets that are then applied to the extraction site. This has been proven to speed up healing by a factor of six, allowing for an easier recovery and a more limited use of pain medications.
P.S. Using PRP therapy to speed healing after a tooth extraction can help avoid complications including dry socket and excessive bone loss.
WHITE SPOT LESIONS
White spot lesions are opaque, chalky, white spots that form on the teeth, often due to a loss of minerals in the tooth’s enamel. They are very common for people with braces who do not brush and floss their teeth properly. They can also be caused by consuming a lot of acidic foods such as citrus fruits and coffee, and are often the first sign of a cavity. Although the lesions cannot be removed once they form, in some cases the dentist may be able to reduce their appearance with micro-abrasion treatments. An appointment with the dentist should be made as soon as they appear to avoid cavities and other serious problems.
P.S. One common cause of a white spot is trauma to the tooth during its development.
NO NEEDLES, NO DRILLS, NO STRESS!
Ask anyone, from children to their grandparents, why they do not like going to the dentist and they will likely tell you “because of the needles and drills.” However, microdentistry and air abrasion are changing dental experiences today, by not only eliminating the need for drills and anesthesia, but also by preventing the loss of healthy tooth material that drilling usually causes. Air abrasion uses air and an abrasive powder to remove only the decaying portion of a tooth. Once the decayed material has been removed, the cavity is filled with bonding material and sealed to prevent more decay. The goal is to do this as early as possible, so the least amount of tooth enamel is lost.
P.S. Even though microdentistry often involves more than one appointment, the cost is usually less than that of a regular cavity restoration.
A DENTAL SOLUTION FOR A BREATHING PROBLEM
Like many other medical conditions, sleep apnea has different forms, each with its own treatment mode. Surprisingly, one of them comes from the dentist. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form, occurs when the tongue and soft pallet block the sleepers’ airways, causing them to stop breathing multiple times during the night. Severe OSA may need to be treated with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, but mild to moderate OSA can often be addressed with a dental appliance that keeps the tongue from sliding back and blocking the airway. These devices are molded to the teeth of each individual patient by the dentist and may require a few visits to adjust the fit.
P.S. Using a dental device to help with obstructed sleep apnea may result in bite changes, so a morning “repositioner” should be used to realign the bite.

CROWNING
ACHIEVEMENTS
When the need to replace a
severely damaged tooth with
a tooth-shaped restoration,
known as a “crown” arises,
patients have a number of
options. Because all-ceramic
crowns are metal-free, they
offer a seamless and naturallooking
choice. Although
traditionally limited to the
front teeth, they are also
suitable for other areas of
the mouth. However, for
patients who clench their
back teeth, gold crowns may
be a better choice, where
durability trumps aesthetics.
In addition, next to allceramic
dental crowns,
porcelain-fused-to-metal
crowns offer the next, most
aesthetically pleasing
choice. While the crown’s
metal interior somewhat
detracts from the translucent
quality of the tooth, the
metal provides important
support and durability that
an all-ceramic dental crown
cannot match.
P.S. Dental crowns can be
combined with a titanium
implant, in cases where the
entire tooth (including the
root) has been lost.

CAVITY PREVENTION
FOR CHILDREN
One of the most effective
proactive steps parents can
take to help ensure that their
children will not develop
tooth decay and cavities is to
have the dentist apply
“sealants” to their children’s
teeth. The most likely place
for cavities to develop in
children is on the chewing
surfaces of their back teeth,
where the tiny grooves
known as “pits and fissures”
trap bacteria and food
particles. Because
toothbrush bristles don’t
always effectively clean
down to the bottoms of these
crevices, children stand to
benefit greatly from the
application of an invisible
plastic coating that smooths
uneven chewing surfaces
and seals out food and
bacteria. Sealants are easy to
apply and cost far less than
the dental fillings they
prevent.
P.S. After slightly “etching”
the area to be sealed with an
acid solution to better ensure
proper adhesion, the dentist
brushes on liquid sealant,
which hardens in about one
minute.
