Big News!

UMMC has been awarded an $11.9 million NIH grant to launch the new Balance and Auditory Research Center (BARC) within the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery!

This major funding from the National Institutes of Health’s Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence program will fuel groundbreaking research into hearing and balance — two of the most common yet underserved health challenges. Over the next five years (with potential renewal up to 15 years), our team will explore molecular and cellular mechanisms to develop innovative diagnostics, therapies, and rehabilitation techniques.

Dr. Wu Zhou, PI and director of the new center, highlights key research areas including gene therapy, hair cell regeneration, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Stay tuned as UMMC leads the way in advancing vestibular and auditory neuroscience! 👂🧠

Congratulations to this incredible team of investigators! Learn more >> https://umc.edu/news/News_Articles/2025/09/BARC.html
