Here’s the deal….
👉🏼Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication that works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It does this by blocking the action of an enzyme called H+/K+-ATPase, which is responsible for secreting acid into the stomach.
👉🏼Omeprazole can interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients like B12 & iron, putting you at risk for vitamin & mineral deficiencies.
👉🏼Reducing acidity in the stomach makes you more prone to SIBO, bacterial, fungal & viral infections.
👉🏼Stomach acid is needed to signal to your pancreas to release digestive enzymes which are needed to properly break down & digest the food you eat
While PPI’s like Oneprazole have their place SHORT term, it’s not a medication I encourage long term use of!
So where does that leave you in terms of managing symptoms?! 👇🏼
1. Figure out what’s causing the reflux in the first part. Could it be low stomach acid, H Pylori etc.?
2. Consider weaning off PPI’s while utilizing herbs like marshmallow root & DGL to soothe & heal damaged tissue (highly recommend working with someone to do this, and of course always consult with your medical team prior to starting).
3. Support natural stomach acid production with bitters herbs, teas and tinctures, dietary changes + through nervous system regulation
