Tomorrow is “New Physician Day”. I intentionally called it as such because every single intern you see tomorrow is a REAL physician. They have put in 4 years of sacrifice and hard work. Their reward? At least 3 more years of sacrifice and hard work. Some will even be overachievers and push that to 7 or more. They will enter a system designed to allow them to continue to learn while simultaneously ensuring that the care for you, your children, and your parents goes on without a hitch. Tomorrow they may start off as passengers but eventually they will be guiding the ship like every intern before them. Wish them well.

I didn’t realize that Steve McMichael, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend, had been diagnosed with ALS.

This is a minefield with evolving data, many unknowns, and a societal love for the sport (of which I share).

Patients should be fully engaged in their care. The most important thing in the medical evaluation is not a blood test. It’s not a MRI. It’s the patient history; no one knows this better than patients themselves.

And doctors would be wise to listen.
