The start of the new school year is a great time for children to get a checkup. You can walk into our urgent care clinics in Jackson and Milan on your schedule.

A checkup allows children to stay current with any immunizations or sports physicals required as the new year begins. It also allows us to update and manage any medications they need to take at school and provide written instructions, if necessary, for school staff.

And it’s just good for students’ overall health. An annual exam allows our providers to monitor a child’s growth and development, screen for common health issues, and detect problems early, providing an opportunity for timely intervention and treatment.

These well-child visits give parents an opportunity to ask questions, and they give our providers a chance to discuss healthy habits to promote their student’s overall well-being.

So put an annual exam on your child’s back-to-school list. It’s a proactive step to ensure they are healthy and ready to learn and thrive in the upcoming academic year.

And remember, you can get your child’s checkup at your convenience. Our clinics in Jackson and Milan are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.

This can happen if your body heats up too quickly, or if you lose too much fluid or salt through sweating and dehydration.

When body temperatures rise, you or someone you know could be at risk for a heat-related illness. Knowing the symptoms of extreme heat exposure and how to respond is crucial for staying safe. When temperatures soar, here’s what to look for and how to respond:

Often the first sign of heat-related trouble, heat cramps can quickly escalate to more serious conditions like heat exhaustion or stroke.

𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬: You’ll likely experience painful muscle cramps and spasms, typically in your legs and abdomen, accompanied by heavy sweating.

𝐅𝐒𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐒𝐝: Apply firm pressure or gently massage the cramping muscles to ease the spasms. Sip water slowly, but stop if you feel nauseous.

π–π‘πžπ§ 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐒𝐜𝐚π₯ 𝐑𝐞π₯𝐩: If cramps persist for longer than one hour, seek immediate medical attention.

π™ƒπ™šπ™–π™© 𝙀𝙭𝙝𝙖π™ͺπ™¨π™©π™žπ™€π™£

This is a more serious condition than heat cramps and requires prompt attention to prevent progression to heat stroke.

𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬: Expect heavy sweating, weakness or tiredness, and cool, pale, clammy skin. Your pulse might be fast and weak. Other signs include muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, headache, and even fainting.

𝐅𝐒𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐒𝐝: Get the person to a cooler environment, ideally an air-conditioned room. Loosen their clothing and apply cool, wet cloths to their skin, or have them take a cool shower. Offer sips of water.

π–π‘πžπ§ 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐒𝐜𝐚π₯ 𝐑𝐞π₯𝐩: Seek immediate medical attention if the person vomits, their symptoms worsen, or they last longer than one hour.

π™ƒπ™šπ™–π™© π™Žπ™©π™§π™€π™ π™š

Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency and can be fatal if not treated immediately. Call 911 or get the victim to a hospital.

𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬: Look for a throbbing headache, confusion, slurred speech, nausea, and dizziness. The person’s body temperature will be above 103Β°F, and their skin may be hot, red, and dry or damp. Their pulse will be rapid and strong, and they might faint or lose consciousness.

𝐅𝐒𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐒𝐝: Call 911 immediately or get the person to a hospital without delay. While waiting for help, move the victim to a cooler, preferably air-conditioned, environment. Try to reduce their body temperature with cool cloths or a bath. You can use a fan if the heat index is below the high 90s; otherwise, a fan can actually make them hotter. Do NOT give fluids.

Keep children safe when temperatures soar. It’s important to make kids aware of the very real dangers of heat and to monitor them for heat stress and heat-related illnesses. Children, especially young children, lack the ability to regulate their body temperature in the same way as adults.

βœ” Never leave infants or children in a parked car, even if the windows are open.
βœ” Dress infants and children in loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
βœ” Put heavy sunscreen on them.
βœ” Make sure they’re drinking plenty of fluids. Stay away from really cold drinks or drinks with too much sugar.
βœ” Schedule outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day like morning and evening hours.
βœ” Activities like swimming are a great way to cool off while staying active.

We hope you’re having a safe and healthy summer. But if you ever need us, we’re here for you! Visit physiciansqualitycare.com.
