Some reasons that may negatively impact sleep can include mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders. Other reasons may be related to physical health such as chronic pain, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, or other medical issues.
When poor sleep becomes routine instead of the exception you may want to talk with a therapist about how to make changes to get proper rest. During initial evaluation your therapist may make additional recommendations to have a medical provider assess for physical issues that may require medical interventions, such as a sleep study for sleep apnea or medication for restless leg syndrome, just as an example.
CBT-I is much more than just a set of “sleep hygiene” instructions.
Stimulus control – helps you have a more positive response to your bed at night
Sleep restriction – matches the time you spend in bed to how long you sleep
Relaxation training – teaches you how to prepare your mind and body for sleep
Cognitive psychotherapy – helps you identity attitudes and beliefs that affect sleep
Sleep hygiene training – helps you change daily habits that affect sleep
The three P model stands for predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating factors that impact sleep. Predisposing factors are linked to genetics and factors that are outside of one’s control. Precipitating factors are usually short-term factors that can temporarily create difficulty sleeping. Examples might be having a new baby or pet in the home, moving, changing jobs, stress related to loss. Perpetuating factors are things that, despite our best efforts, may create longer term problems with our sleep. An example may be going to bed when tired but not sleepy, not keeping a routine, sleeping in on weekends to “catch up” on sleepless nights.
Sleep also requires alignment of three things, which are sleep drive, low arousal, and circadian rhythm. A CBT-I therapist can explain how all of these concepts come together and look at your particular habits to determine the best points of intervention to build first quality and then quantity of sleep. Make an appointment today with one of our therapists!

More than just awareness, people with autism need acceptance and understanding of their need for friends. Let's remember to embrace neurodiversity in the workplace, at home, and in the community.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a distinctive developmental condition rooted in unique brain variances. Individuals affected by ASD frequently encounter hurdles related to social communication, interaction, and the presence of limited or repetitive behaviors and interests. They may also exhibit diverse approaches to learning, mobility, or focus. While some individuals without ASD may display specific symptoms, it is the combination of these characteristics that presents significant challenges to the lives of those with autism.

At LeFleur Behavioral Health, we offer an array of specialized psychotherapy, assessment, consultation, and care management services delivered by highly-trained and experienced mental health professionals.

Our very own, Tia Coleman, MS, P-LPC, recommends, “It Didn’t Start With You” by Mark Wolynn, as a great read to her clients!

This book shows how the traumas of our parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents can live in our unexplained depression, anxiety, fears, phobias, obsessive thoughts and physical symptoms—what scientists are now calling “secondary PTSD.”

Ultimately, readers learn how to convert old, fearful images into ones that bring strength and healing. “It Didn’t Start With You” is the first book of its kind to offer step-by-step guidance to help people break the cycle of destructive inherited family patterns.
