We try to make the activities that we do with our kiddos involve things they like, and still address goals! This activity includes tracing "+" or "x" using his favorite thing which is cars. We also addressed sorting skills and fine motor coordination with the cars in the parking lots, and texture play with the pond (blue putty) beside the road! So many skills can be addressed with one activity!

Kids with sensory difficulties often are very picky eaters and mealtime can be very stressful for both the child and the parent. Making mealtime fun for the child can decrease the anxiety surrounding exploring new foods. This is an example of an activity I do with my kids to encourage touching, smelling, and tasting new foods using real and play foods.

When you have a business, you have to expect that there may be times when a customer may not be happy, or your product or services may not work. Well, I've experienced that when there was a child I wasn't able to help. But mainly because his issues expanded beyond my scope of practice. We tried everything we could think of and nothing worked. It's ok to admit defeat and especially if the defeat was the reflection of needing to ask for help. Realizing that you can't save or help everybody is a hard pill to swallow, but keeps you grounded.

Reflecting on clients I've worked with who really inspired me and I'd have to say that all my pediatric clients inspire me everyday. They come in so full of life and eager to exist in this world like everyone else. And even with the challenges they face, they take on every challenge head on! They often make my problems seem so small...

The level of dedication the rescue workers had on 9/11 was unbelievable. Loving what you do as a career really shows in adversity. There was a time when one of my patients was in a car accident on the way to their appointment with me, and when they called me, I dropped everything and went running. I was afraid that I might be in the way but turned out I was more help than I realized. (Ground Zero, NYC)

If I could go back in time and tell the younger version of me that was an OT student, I would tell myself, "Stay focused and don't let anyone tell you that you can't achieve something because you will change many lives in the future. So wipe your tears and be confident in who you are!"
