Dr. Mildred T. Stahlman transformed the care of premature infants, pioneering treatments for lung disease and establishing the nation’s first newborn intensive care unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She also founded Vanderbilt’s Division of Neonatology, training generations of physicians and setting a new standard for neonatal care.

“Dr. Stahlman was pioneering in so many ways,” said Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, president and chief executive officer of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. “Refusing to accept the poor outcomes of babies born prematurely, she forged new methods to support their survival while upending the field of neonatology.”

Today, her legacy lives on in every baby cared for in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We are honored to continue her work—supporting families and protecting the most vulnerable lives.

A statue of Dr. Stahlman is now part of Monumental Figures, a sculpture exhibit by Alan LeQuire on view at the Parthenon through Sept. 21.

Hot cars, stuffy strollers — summer weather can mean hazards for babies and young children that may not seem obvious. For example, it’s smart to keep your car locked when at home to prevent a toddler from climbing in and getting stuck in a hot garage. And those light gauzy blankets draped over a stroller to keep the sun out may be causing a greenhouse effect, overheating baby.
See the link in our comments for wise steps for parents to take to keep children safe during hot weather.

Their first birthday was more than a milestone. It was a chance to come back to the place that helped them get there.

The Barton triplets spent their first season of life surrounded by machines, monitors and the steady hands of the team in our neonatal intensive care unit.

A year later, they returned to say thank you.

Three growing boys. Three rooms of nurses and staff who remembered every detail.

“They celebrated with us like they were family,” said their mom, Monica.

Because in many ways, they are.

Monica went into labor with her triplets at home at 26 weeks. Matthew was inches from being born before the ambulance even arrived. By that night, she had delivered three boys—each dangerously premature, each fighting to survive.

They were so small, two had eyes still fused shut. One needed bowel surgery within hours. Each baby had their own ambulance team. Monica was transferred, too.

When she got to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, she didn’t just meet nurses—she met the people who would guide her through 100 days in the NICU.

“We weren’t expecting any of this,” she said. “But they held my hand, they kept the boys together, and they were our lifeline.”

Her oldest son, Carter, had to wait weeks before he could even hold his brothers. Today, he reads to them. Feeds them. Protects them.

The triplets are 18 months old now—growing, hitting milestones and filling their tiny house with noise, toys and joy.

“They still text me to check in,” Monica said about the NICU team. “That’s the part no one tells you—how much they love your babies like you do.”
