What is your word?
Every year millions of Americans make goals or new years resolutions in January only to let them slip away in too short of time. Usually by February they are all but forgotten.
I myself have made several in past years. My top one or two usually get tackled and for the most part, achieved. the rest get modified , put on the back -burner or forgotten all together.
A few years ago I started to use “Themes”, thanks to the book Goal Free Living by Stephen Shapiro. This is a concept of heading in a direction with a reminder theme or phrase to keep you on track for who you want to be. “Be in the moment” was one I have used in the past to remind me to be present mentally with family and when interacting with co-workers and/or business associates.
This year I read a short and to the point book called One Word that will change your life by Britton , Page and Gordon. Excellent concept and a great idea to keep you focused on your One Thing (another book that i will talk about in another blog).
This book goes well with the theme approach set forth by Shapiro as the authors recommend using one word throughout the year that will remind you of your purpose and priorities that position you for success day in and day out.
Flexibility
Focus
Gratitude
Determined
Loving
Humble
Decisive
Healthy
The above are examples of words you could use the help guide your daily, weekly and monthly focus.
The authors recommend letting the word “find you” as you contemplate the best word for yourself through solitude, mediation and /or prayer.
Your one word makes you a better you and usually will involve serving others as well as your own personal needs.
They recommend making signs and posters to place in various locations that you will come in contact with though out your day. Also, share this with those important to you to encourage you stay accountable in acting on your word daily.
This technique has been successful in business, professional and college sports as well as within family and classroom dynamics.
I like the fact it bring focus to what is important and helps people control their thoughts, not just worry about or too often forget a list of goals that don’t keep our attention on who we want to be.
Here’s to you finding your word for the year!
