Have you had questions regarding a new medication? Pharmacists play an important role in the health of seniors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 7 in 10 adults ages 40-79 use at least one prescription drug, and around 1 in 5 use at least five. Here are nine frequently asked questions pharmacists receive regarding seniors and their medications.

Do you remember learning “stop, drop and roll” in school? The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports almost 80% of deaths from clothing fires happen to older adults. As we head into peak season for home fires, make sure you have a fire plan in place.

We want to spotlight Patricia Waters, caregiver at Right at Home South Central Michigan. Recently, one of her clients needed transportation to the train station so he could visit family. Patricia didn’t just drive him to the station—she arrived early at his home, helped him get ready and prepare for the trip, and then drove him to the station. She also picked him up on his return, made him dinner, and ensured he was set for the night before heading home. Thank you, Patricia, for living the Right at Home mission to improve the quality of life for those we serve. Your dedication is impactful!

Did you know in-home care and home health care are not the same?

In-home care provides nonclinical help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and activities of daily living (ADL), which are needed for a person to live independently at home.

Home health provides professional medical care at home to treat a health condition, is prescribed by a doctor, and is performed by clinical staff such as an RN or occupational therapist.

If you are a new family caregiver, you can easily be overwhelmed and stressed. Whether you agreed to do it in advance or had to step up due to a family emergency, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are some tasks to help you get started.

Individuals older than 65 are twice as likely to die or be seriously injured by home fires due to slower reflexes, vision loss, mobility problems and cognitive impairment. Inspecting your loved one’s home for fire hazards could save their life in the event of an emergency. Here are three common fire hazards to look for:

1. Smoke alarms with dead batteries.
2. Space heaters close to bedding and drapes.
3. Clutter that blocks walkways and exits.

Did you know, even though men are more prone to stroke, women are more likely to die from a stroke? Strokes are the third-leading cause of death in women, killing 85,000 women each year in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you suspect someone is experiencing a stroke, the CDC suggests you follow the F.A.S.T. steps.

Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

Time: If you see any of these signs, call 911 right away.

In-home care can help you or a loved one remain at home longer, but you may be wondering, “How would I pay for in-home care?” There are a number of ways to pay, which is why we created a guide that explains the resources available to help you or a loved one receive care right at home.

Download our guide today: https://rahlink.com/WaysToPayGuide

Case managers oversee care coordination and serve as patient advocates. The Case Management Society of America (CMSA) has adopted the Transition of Care model into their Standards of Practice. Utilizing this model has shown a significant decrease in hospital readmission rates.

The Transition of Care model focuses on four pillars: patient education, medication reconciliation, patient follow-ups and a patient-centered approach. Right at Home is proud to support case managers and be a trusted care partner to help lower the risk of hospital readmissions by providing personalized in-home care to patients. If you or a loved one needs support in transitioning home after a hospital stay or procedure, let us help you.

Being a family caregiver can be a full-time job. It should come as no surprise that working family caregivers are at an increased risk for depression, anxiety and heart disease. Taking care of your own mental health will allow you to provide better support to your loved ones. Here are three ways you can lower your stress as a working family caregiver.

1. Speak up. Friends and family are often willing to step up and help. However, if you do not speak up, they will not know what you need or how you feel.
2. Share the responsibility. Divide tasks such as medical responsibilities, finances, groceries, transportation and housework. You divide and delegate tasks at work to ensure projects are successful. Apply the same idea and enlist individuals to help with tasks.
3. Look into respite care. Volunteers or caregivers from in-home care services like Right at Home can provide assistance, either occasionally or on a regular basis.

Being a family caregiver could cost you more than your time—it could cost you $700,000 over your lifetime. Family caregiving can lead to lost wages, reduced pension and other retirement account contributions, and lower Social Security benefits. Let us show you how to reach out for help, find resources, and talk to your employer about any programs they offer.

When thinking about retirement, we start planning for travel, hobbies and checking off items on our bucket list. But one important item that doesn’t often make the list is planning for long-term care. You may need long-term care due to a sudden illness, an injury or chronic health conditions. Regardless of the reason, the cost of long-term care should be part of your retirement plan.

Much of what we might dread about growing older comes not from our own experience, but from societal attitudes. The less prejudice against aging an older adult experiences, the likelier they are to be happy, healthy, and even live longer. Check your attitude toward aging with the following questions:

1. Do I make self-deprecating jokes at my own expense?
2. Do I sometimes automatically assume I can’t do something because “older people can’t, or won’t?”
3. Do I decide not to do something, wear something, or go somewhere because “it’s not age-appropriate?”

To learn more about staying optimistic about aging, head over to our website and check out our blog, “Give Your Attitude About Aging a Checkup.”

Jeanne had been receiving in-home care from the Right at Home Hudson Valley office for over three years. When the Hudson Valley team learned that Jeanne would be moving to a memory care unit, they wanted to share with her the impact that she and her family had on their lives. Jeanne’s caregivers created a video to highlight memories of their time with Jeanne. Right at Home’s mission is to improve the quality of life for those we serve, but we often find the client and their family affect our lives in ways we did not expect. Thank you to the Right at Home Hudson Valley team for providing outstanding care and making sure Jeanne knew how much she was loved.

Tornados, hurricanes, floods, fires, ice storms and blizzards affect tens of millions of Americans each year. When disaster hits, things caregivers and seniors take for granted often suddenly become unavailable. In case of a disaster, you should have on hand an easy-to-read contact list, which should include phone numbers and emails for:

• Family
• Friends
• Neighbors
• Primary care doctor
• Pharmacies
• Food pantries
• Local emergency service organizations

Make copies of this document and place them in an easy-to-see area and a fireproof and waterproof container. Caregivers should also retain a copy.

Families can help older loved ones create a safer home environment by following these steps:

1. Clear the way. Create an unobstructed path in rooms. Remove clutter and rearrange furniture. Remove items that could cause your loved one to trip, such as throw rugs and electrical cords.

2. Place frequently used items within easy reach. If your loved one is using a chair or footstool to reach things, move frequently used items to lower shelves and drawers.

3. Eliminate slippery surfaces. Clean up spills promptly, shovel stairs and sidewalks in the winter, and replace slick flooring if necessary.

4. Make other safety upgrades. Install grab bars in the bathroom, a second railing on stairs and improved lighting throughout the house. Paint the edges of stairs with high-contrast color.

Jack, 91, has been checking off items on his bucket list with the help of his caregiver, Roy. First up was a trip to the Texas State Fair to see Big Tex and have a delicious Fletcher’s Corny Dog. Next, they headed to the John Wayne Museum in Fort Worth to see Jack’s favorite actor, The Duke. This month, they are planning a trip to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas. Jack’s daughter says she is so appreciative of these outings and the enjoyment they have brought her dad. We are very grateful to have Roy on the care team representing Right at Home Lewisville and thankful for the joy he brings to the lives of his clients.
