For Jilliann Rowsey—graduating senior and incoming Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student—the Lambuth Campus is more than a place; it’s home.

With deep roots in the local community, she’s found a second family in the faculty and staff who have supported her throughout her journey. For the past three years, she’s called the close-knit, picturesque campus home—and she plans to do so for three more as she continues her education.

Actively engaged on campus and throughout the Jackson community, Rowsey is eager to translate her experiences into meaningful, hands-on impact. As she begins her DPT program, she looks forward to using her skills to support the health and strength of the community that has shaped her.

Meet Kat Welsheimer, a competitive performing arts athlete turned future clinician. On top of that, in three short years she’ll be a double Memphis graduate, having earned her undergrad in 2022.

Raised in Olympia, Kat developed through a foundation in baton twirling, gymnastics, and dance, ultimately specializing in baton twirling at an elite level. She earned selection to the USA World Team four times and, alongside her twin sister, medaled twice at the World Championships in the pairs division.

She continued her athletic and academic journey at the University of Memphis as a Tiger Twin Feature Twirler with the Mighty Sound of the South while completing her studies in Exercise Science with a minor in Nutrition.

Kat is now entering the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Memphis, with a clear goal of pursuing sports physical therapy focused on performing arts populations. She is especially driven to support dancers and performers in recovering from injury and returning to high-level performance.

She chose Memphis for its strong student-focused culture and the academic strength of the College of Health Sciences. As a Carnegie R1 institution, Memphis also offers a research-driven environment she plans to engage in, particularly in dance-related injury and lower-extremity rehabilitation.

Kat is excited to begin her journey as part of the inaugural Memphis DPT cohort.

‼️Not every PT program teaches this—but it’s the secret that sets the best clinicians apart: literacy. 📚

Not reading books—reading RESEARCH.

It’s one of the most critical skills for becoming a sought-after clinician, building a successful practice and performing at the highest level in the field. Yet, it’s often overlooked in traditional curricula.

That’s where Ross Smith steps in.

With a highly technical background in biomechanics research and a foundation in communications, Dr. Smith is uniquely equipped to teach students how to not just read research—but actually understand it, apply it and use it to drive better outcomes.

These are the skills that carry you far beyond the classroom—the ones that shape your entire career.

And just one more reason this program isn’t built for the present—it’s built for the future.

Read Dr. Smith’s story and see how he’s impacting students and the broader community.
