Oxygen in a homebirth setting isn’t an emergency tool… it’s a support tool.

Just like having water, warmth, and hands-on care—oxygen is one more way midwives support the natural physiology of birth.

There are moments in labor or postpartum where a little extra oxygen can:
• support a tired mama
• help during a longer pushing phase
• assist baby in their transition
• be part of normal newborn resuscitation if needed

This isn’t fear-based care.
This is prepared care.

Homebirth doesn’t mean doing less.
It means doing what’s needed—with intention.

Save this so you feel confident asking your provider:
“What tools do you bring to support physiological birth?”

✨A V A✨

This first-time mama absolutely blew us away with the birth of her daughter. She did the deep work before labor ever began—getting educated, informed, and rooted in trust—so when the day came, she knew exactly where to go: inward. Trusting her body. Surrendering to the unfolding.

When labor started, she leaned in and followed the rhythm of her waves. She called the midwives, then made the intuitive decision to stay in her space and labor at home with her husband a little longer—just the two of them, grounded and connected.

By the time the midwives arrived a few short hours later, she was already laboring down, her body doing the work effortlessly, instinctively. When she chose to be checked and heard she was complete, the room filled with so much joy. Her husband and mother beamed with pride, witnessing her strength and surrender.

As her body began to push on its own, she listened. She moved. She stepped out of the tub, choosing to work with gravity, following what felt right. And with her full power, she brought her baby earthside.

Catching her breath on hands and knees, in that sacred pause between worlds, our student gently placed baby onto her back—keeping them close—until mama’s arms were ready to receive.

A beautiful birth.
A powerful mother.
A baby welcomed with trust, strength, and a deeply supported space. ✨

A newborn exam is a full head-to-toe assessment—but sometimes it looks as simple as these gentle hands 🤍

Here, your midwife is assessing your baby’s cranial structure—feeling the sutures and soft spots (fontanelles) to understand how baby molded during birth and how everything is aligning after that journey earthside.

This small piece tells us a lot about baby’s experience and can even give insight into feeding, comfort, and tension patterns.

At the same time, we’re also assessing how baby is adapting overall—
listening to the heart and lungs, observing color, checking oxygen levels, and watching those early reflexes and muscle tone.

We check baby’s palate, spine, hips, cord, and symmetry—making sure everything is transitioning just as it should.

It’s not rushed.
It’s not separate from you.
It’s thorough, skilled care woven into those first hours.

What’s something you didn’t realize was part of a newborn exam? ✨

This long-awaited third baby did some true third baby things ✨ For weeks at the end of pregnancy this mama experienced prodromal labor, and we all patiently waited for this baby girl to pick her birthday. As we approached 42 weeks, we tried many gentle induction techniques but this baby stayed put despite our efforts —until 42+ weeks, when a rupture of membranes shifted everything. And just like that, she was ready. In a fast and powerful 1 hour 15 minute labor, this mama fully surrendered—trusting her body, her baby, and riding the intensity of a quick, beautiful birth. With her team’s help, this sweet girl was born in the water and brought straight to her chest, welcomed with steady, loving hands. Two big sisters watched their strong mama in awe, alongside a dear friend who had given birth just days before—such a full circle moment of women supporting women. Fast, intense, and filled with so much beauty… followed by a slow, soft postpartum—laughter, nourishment, nursing, helping hands, and so much love 🤍 Every birth is so unique in how it unfolds & it was a privilege to support this family, with this mama’s autonomy and informed choice at the forefront of it all. This is our second beautiful birth together, what an honor to watch this family grow. Your midwives love you baby Zinnia 💐💕

✨E Z R E N✨

This third-time mama got her wild card birth — the first time not going past her due date. Fully expecting another long wait, she tuned in when early signs of labor began and gently looped in her team. With two littles at home, she kept life moving as usual… until the sun set and everything began to shift.

She listened deeply to her body, flowing with each wave as it came. And when her body began to spontaneously push, she followed that instinct fully. With her husband and doula by her side, she brought her baby up to her chest — and the whole room filled with joy.

Mom and dad chose to find out baby’s gender in that moment… and were surprised to discover their second boy 🤍

Not long after, big sister was woken up to meet her newest sibling — her excitement matching everyone else’s.

A beautiful, love-filled postpartum followed… full of little feet running around, full hearts, and a now family of five ✨

✨E S T E L L A ✨

What a ride this birth was! This mama transferred into our care at the end of her pregnancy, wanting to pursue a VBAC in the comfort of her home. The very next day she went into labor & we met for the first time between her early labor contractions 😅 Her body slowly but steadily opened, and she worked through each phase of labor with so much determination, patience & trust in the process. With every check in we found her more progressed, just needing plenty of time to get to the next step of labor. For close to three days she labored, and we waited so patiently alongside of her, gently encouraging, guiding and holding space for her and her family. When she was fully dilated, we all celebrated & waited for the spontaneous urge to push. Her contractions spaced out so much though, her body’s way of telling us she was tired. And after trying every trick in our bag, with great consideration, we all agreed it was best to transfer in for some assistance in the hospital. After a few more hours with pitocin on board, she had the quickest pushing phase and birthed the most beautiful baby girl. Talk about a hard earned birth! We celebrated her victorious VBAC, totally in awe of her grit & determination. This mother is an absolute force. Your midwives love you baby Estella 💕

This week we celebrate the women who hold it all together behind the scenes—our doulas 🤍

The steady hands, the calming presence, the ones who walk into sacred spaces and immediately soften the room. The ones who remind mothers of their strength, support partners with intention, and hold space in a way that can’t be taught… only felt.

We are endlessly grateful for the doulas in our community that we get to work alongside. Birth is never meant to be done alone, and you are such an important part of that village.

And to the doulas who don’t carry the title—
the sisters, the friends, the mothers, the daughters—
the women who show up, who nurture, who support with love…
this is your work too. This has always been the heart of it. Women supporting women.

To every doula—seen and unseen, in the quiet moments and the powerful ones—this week is for you.

These are just some of the amazing women we have worked with over the years!! Drop some love below and tag your doula so we can celebrate them together!

It’s our girl’s birthday!!!

Our magical birth assistant Courtney is truly one of a kind. She’s the quiet magic behind the scenes and the steady presence every family feels. A cleaning fairy, a gentle hand to hold, a keeper of the sacred placenta, and so much more.

She pours so much love into every space she enters, and we are endlessly grateful to have her as part of our team.

Drop some birthday love for her below 🤍✨

For those who don’t know, our very own midwife Maya has another sweet baby blooming in her belly! Our Modern Midwives family continues to grow in the most beautiful, full-circle ways, and we are overjoyed for Maya and her family as they step into this new season.

As she nurtures this little life and transitions into postpartum, Maya will be stepping away from attending births beginning in May. She plans to return to our birth space this winter, refreshed, restored, and ready to hold space once again.

Help us celebrate her and this growing family by showering her with love in the comments below✨✨✨
