As we enter into the autumn season, there tends to be more dryness. Dryness may injure our lung qi & its associated areas of the skin, nose & wei qi / protective energy / immune system. To support the lungs, singing or chanting may be practiced. Two healing sounds that specifically support the lung qi are “Shang” & “Ni”. Shang is pronounced shong. Ni is pronounced knee. Shang may be used to affect a wide or broad area. Yet ni may be used to effect a more pin-pointed area. The key with healing sounds is to adjust the volume, pitch & tone of the sound so that we may feel the vibration in the intended area. Enjoy your fall sounding!

In Chinese medicine, the Fire element & our heart are associated with joy & laughter. Yet when we are sad, anxious, disappointed or experiencing heartbreak, we may be experiencing a lack of joy. With a lack of joy, there is not enough energy for laughter. There is not enough energy to warm one’s heart, for friendship or passion, or twinkling in the eyes & spirit. Luckily, laughter can act like the flames of a fire rising with crackles & sputters, & raising one’s energy & emotions.

To experience this raising of one’s energy & emotions, check out one of my favorite videos on Laughter Yoga. In this TEDxOhioStateUniversity, Ida Abdalkhani “engaged the audience in a laughter yoga session. Like she says, laughter yoga is forcing oneself to laugh, and the silly, forced laughter becomes real laughter that gets blood flowing and endorphins released into the body. In addition to instructing the laughter yoga session, Ida shared the benefits of laughter yoga”. Check out the video & see if you are Happier in 5 minutes too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HJG63EXCmw Link in bio.

Do you feel like you have no fun, laughter or joy in your life? Are you overwhelmed with your responsibilities? Are you burned out? Do you have anxiety, sadness, emptiness, or heartbreak? When our heart & its meridian system is out of balance, we may experience all of these & more.

In Chinese medicine, our fire element desires deep heart-to-heart connection & communication. How do we communicate from our heart? We speak from what one of my teachers, Thea Elijah, calls Heart Voice. When we speak from Heart Voice, we may experience some wonderful effects. Some of these include: warmth radiating in the heart, pure joy, deeper connection in our relationships. To practice speaking from the heart, feel the depth of your heart. From that depth & resonance, speak with yourself, any animals, & other people. See what happens next…♥️

To learn more about Heart Voice, join Thea on Sunday, May 21, 2023 from 11am-1pm EST live on Zoom for her Heart Voice - Whole Heart Connection: Opening the Door webinar. For more information or to register, 🔗

This is one of my favorite pictures of me laughing. Really laughing. What the picture doesn’t tell is that it was taken after the mother of my oldest & dearest friend had died. We were in the liquor store getting supplies for her mom’s memorial. We were laughing, crying & hugging in the middle of the store. It is in times of heartbreak, sadness, trauma, anxiety & stress that laughter may help us heal.

Over the next several weeks, we will explore ways to help heal one’s heart. Leading us to the summer solstice & summer season which in Chinese medicine is the season that resonates with the heart & its meridian system to help it heal. ♥️

Are you dehydrated? There’s another reason to listen to your health practitioner when they say to drink more water. Based on a recent study, middle aged adults with inadequate fluid intake may be biologically older than their chronological age & at a higher risk of chronic disease. Some of these chronic diseases indicated in the study include yet not limited to: heart failure, dementia, chronic lung disease, stroke, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, & peripheral vascular disease. The results of this study suggest that proper hydration may slow down aging & prolong a disease-free life.

In Chinese medicine, being well-hydrated may support the health of one’s blood, body fluids, yin, kidneys, bladder, bones, brain, head hair, & “ming men” which translates to gate of vitality. When trying to increase one’s hydration, start with adding one additional glass of room temperature or warm water per day. Then, notice how you feel with that change. For some individuals, it may be helpful to set reminders to drink water when we are busy with work or life activities.

Happy Chinese New Year! Welcome the Yin Water Rabbit! The rabbit & it’s years appear to be growth cycles. Rabbits tend to be more balanced in their activity levels; they are frequently seen hopping around or curled up as they sleep. Therefore, rabbit years tend to be more balanced even in times of growth / change. Rabbits do not tend to take risks & may be seen as the gentlest of the 12 astrological animals. It is this cautiousness & care that may be used to move forward through this year. Most importantly, like the rabbit, continue growing / improving, build your community / family, & take time to rest.

In Chinese medicine there is a relationship between the head & feet. More specifically, if we fold the body in half at the waist, the head & feet mirror each other. Therefore, what we do to the feet affects the head & vice versa.

Here are 3 of my favorite techniques that we can do to the feet to affect the head.

1- When we take off the shoes, this unbinds the feet. Yet, this also opens the head & mind to take in & learn new information.

2- Acupressure on the sole of the foot helps with sleep. We can augment this by imagining the thoughts moving out through the feet. Find the sole of the foot. Then find the straight line between the 2nd & 3rd toes. Also find the horizontal line where the balls of the feet & arch come together. Where the straight line between the 2nd & 3rd toes, & the horizontal line of the balls of the feet / arch intersect, this is the point. Acupressure to a count of 100.

3- The feet are a reflexology area. They not only affect the head yet also the entire body. One way to look at the feet is to superimpose the shape of the body over the feet. The middle toe would be the head; second & fourth toes are the arms; big & little toes are the legs. The foot would be the torso. Acupressure as needed the middle toe especially by the toenail to affect the head.

Need another reason to incorporate mindfulness practices like yoga, meditation, breathing exercises & qigong? A new study shows that mindfulness practices effectively lower blood sugar in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes. In Chinese medicine, Type 2 Diabetes tends to involve spleen qi deficiency. Mindfulness practices like yoga, meditation, breathing exercise & qigong tend to gently increase the qi in the body.
