Memorial Day is the celebration of soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield. History tells us that Memorial Day (formerly Decoration Day) was started in 1868 by General John A. “Black Jack” Logan, as he wanted to have a national day of remembrance for fallen Civil War soldiers. Logan, a former Union General, was the National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), which constituted living veterans of the war.

This story only highlights one group of people in history.

The untold history of Memorial Day started with a commemoration organized by freed slaves and some white missionaries that took place on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, S.C., at a former planters’ racetrack where Confederates held captured Union soldiers during the last year of the war. At least 257 prisoners died and were buried in unmarked graves; black residents of Charleston decided to give them a proper burial. In approximately 10 days leading up to the event, a group of African Americans reorganized the graves into rows (see picture above) and built a 10-foot-tall white fence around them. An archway overhead spelled out “Martyrs of the Race Course” in black letters.

After all of the hard work was done, the celebration began on May 1st when about 3,000 black schoolchildren paraded around the race track holding roses and singing the Union song “John Brown’s Body,” and were followed by sermons delivered by black pastors, speeches by Union officers, and concluded with three white and black Union regiments marching around the graves and a staged drill.

This is the often untold story of Memorial Day that highlights a part of history that is over-looked.

As you celebrate this holiday, bring light to the truth and remember all who made the ultimate sacrifice!

Alopecia Areata- This is one of the most commonly reported types of hair loss, referring to bald patches or spots on the scalp.

Alopecia Totalis- This is hair loss affecting the whole of the head, including eyelashes and eyebrows.

Alopecia Universalis- This term relates to hair loss all over the body, meaning that the entire epidermis is free from hair. It is the most severe form of alopecia areata.
