Meet Chris Hemmen, our inspiring 2019 Patient Honoree.

From a devastating accident to a double thumbs-up, Chris Hemmen’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. After suffering a severe traumatic brain injury in 2017, Chris fought through 21 days in the ICU and weeks of rehab — supported by the dedicated team at UF Health and an incredible community. Just 54 days after his accident, he walked out of rehab smiling. His story continues to inspire us all.

The UF Health Jacksonville Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit decreases the median time from stroke onset to treatment by about 36 minutes. This allows for 33% of patients to be treated with clot-busting drugs within the first hour on the MSTU, compared to only 3% with EMS management.

When it comes to strokes, we must act FAST. Our MSTU is an extension of our comprehensive stroke care. By bringing hospital-level care directly to patients, our MSTU helps save brain function, improve recovery, and create brighter futures.

We couldn’t do this work without your support, especially during this holiday season. Giving back during this time is essential to support and keep this life-saving unit on the road, reaching patients when every second counts.
