The Link Between Obesity and Cancer: Why Your Weight Matters, Let's Reduce It!
Did you know that maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for reducing your cancer risk? Recent research highlights the significant connection between obesity and various types of cancer. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of at least 12 types of cancer, including endometrial, esophageal, gastric, kidney, colorectal, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, prostate, postmenopausal breast, ovarian, and thyroid cancers.
How Does Obesity Promotes Cancer?
Excess adipose tissue (body fat) contributes to inflammation, hormonal changes, immune system dysfunction, and is associated with altered gut microbiome. All these factors can contribute to stress in the body that directly or indirectly promote tumor growth
Inflammation: Adipose tissue (body fat) dysfunction leads to chronic inflammation and increased levels of inflammatory mediators that can directly or indirectly promote tumor growth.
Hormonal Changes: Obesity can alter hormone production, such as increasing estrogen and leptin levels while decreasing adiponectin. High estrogen levels can fuel hormone-sensitive cancers like breast, ovarian, and endometrial cancers.
Immune System Dysfunction: Obesity can impair the immune system's ability to recognize and eliminate cancer cells by affecting immune cell function and accumulating immunosuppressive cells
Gut Microbiome Alterations: Obesity can deplete beneficial gut bacteria and promote the overgrowth of harmful bacteria, contributing to inflammation and oxidative stress that can lead to cancer
The Importance of Weight Loss
Reducing Cancer Risk: Losing weight can significantly reduce cancer risk by lessening the adverse effects of obesity. Studies show that losing more than 10% of body weight can lead to modest reductions in obesity-associated cancer incidence
Interventions: Weight loss can be achieved through lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise), medications, or bariatric surgery. Data from bariatric surgery has been associated with a 32% reduction in the incidence of obesity-associated cancers. Medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists have also shown promise in reducing the risk of certain obesity-associated cancers.
It's best to maintain a healthy weight is a powerful way to protect yourself. Let's prioritize healthy habits together!
