Sometimes the most meaningful things start in the most ordinary places. For Dr. Dawn Stahurski Mussallem, a member of our Blue Zones Project Jacksonville Steering Committee, it started in the produce aisle of a grocery store here in Northeast Florida. Standing next to a display of purple sweet potatoes, she struck up a conversation with someone she had never met before. That moment turned into something neither of them expected.
Dr. Mussallem, a physician, cancer survivor, and heart transplant recipient, had been intentionally fueling her body with foods that support healing. Purple sweet potatoes became part of her daily routine, not just for their nutritional value, but eventually for something more.
Months later, that same connection came full circle. Her now fiancé proposed using a box of those very same purple sweet potatoes, each one labeled with messages that told their story and asked one simple question: Will you marry me?
It is a reminder that health is not just what we eat or how we move. It is also about connection, joy, and the moments that give our lives meaning.
In the original blue zones, strong relationships are one of the most consistent predictors of longevity. We call it Positive Pack. Dr. Mussallem’s story is a beautiful example of that in action.
Sometimes, a healthier life starts with something as simple as a conversation in the produce aisle. Read the full story at https://people.com/man-proposes-to-girlfriend-with-purple-sweet-potato-exclusive-11956003
