May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
Is melanin enough to protect your skin from the sun? In short — no.

• While melanin offers some natural protection from UV rays, it’s not nearly enough to prevent long-term sun damage.
• In the past two decades, melanoma increase has risen by 20% among Hispanics.
• Late-stage melanoma diagnoses are more prevalent among Hispanic and Black patients than non-Hispanic white patients.
• Even people who rarely burn or tan well should avoid prolonged periods under the sun, especially without sunscreen.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
Let’s talk about INDOOR TANNING:

• More people develop skin cancer because of indoor tanning than develop lung cancer because of smoking.
• Indoor tanning devices can emit UV radiation in amounts 10 to 15 times higher than the sun at its peak intensity.
• 75% — the increased risk of developing life-threatening melanoma from just ONE indoor tanning session before age 35.

• In the U.S. alone, an estimated 3.6 million BCC cases are diagnosed each year.
• An estimated 8,430 people will die of melanoma in 2025.
• More than 1 out of every 3 new cancers are skin cancers and the vast majority are BCCs.
• Basal Cell Carcinoma is quite common and the number of reported cases in the U.S. has steadily increased.
