Knowing when to use heat or ice can help manage pain - but neither replaces proper movement and rehab.

Ice
Ice can be helpful in the early stages of an injury when pain or swelling is limiting movement. Its primary benefit is short-term pain relief, not speeding up tissue healing.

Heat
Heat is often useful for muscle stiffness, soreness, or guarding. It can improve comfort and make movement feel easier, especially before activity.

There’s no universal rule for when to use heat or ice, and alternating them isn’t always necessary. The right choice depends on your symptoms, the type of injury, and what allows you to move better.

At Atlas Physical Therapy, we use heat and ice strategically, but recovery is driven by strength, movement, and progressive loading, not just pain-relief tools.

If you’re unsure what’s best for your situation, we can help guide you.
