Are all face masks created equal? Not quite!
There are three ATSM (US standard) levels on filtration, where Level 3 offers the most protection (fluid resistance) and bacterial resistance to the wearer (bacterial filtration efficacy at 0.1 micron). Although the breathability is much lower, maximum filtration, ie. NIOSH (US standard) tested N95, respirators are recommended for treatment of airborne diseases, such as TB, influenza, and COVID-19.
In terms of risk, Level 1 masks are acceptable in most situations. However, when in close proximity with others, the Level 2 or 3 masks may offer better resistance. In the case of exposure, a respirator will offer both the wearer and others the best protection against a respiratory disease.
