Northeast Florida Lactation Coalition

Northeast Florida Lactation Coalition The NFLC was established in 1992 to promote and support breastfeeding in Northeast Florida. Our vision is that all babies will receive human milk.

Our mission is to encourage hospitals, physicians, nurses and other providers to promote breastfeeding and provide a supportive environment to mothers and to promote an understanding of the value of breastfeeding through evidence based educational lectures and scientific studies. The NFLC works to advance public awareness and acceptance of the importance of breastfeeding from birth, into the secon

d year and beyond, and support a woman's right to breastfeed anytime and anywhere. We advocate that policies be established in the workplace and the right to breastfeed be endorsed as the optimal means of feeding infants.

Get to know milk microbes. B. infantis is a vital bacteria found in human milk, that contributes to the development of the infant's immune system. They promote a reduction in overall inflammation and help to crowd out pathogenic bacteria by eating food sources available. They also produce short chain fatty acids that impact adipose tissue, the lungs, the brain, and the liver. This produces positive effects on the metabolism. They also decrease intestinal permeability, potentially reducing the risk of leaky gut later in life. Unfortunately, we are seeing the extinction of B. infantis in industrialized nations where cesarean birth, antibiotics, and other antimicrobial practices have hindered its continued presence in human milk. โ€œLast year we did an experiment with my home-schooled son - putting different things on bread, or wiping the bread on different surfaces and seeing how quickly mould developed, how much and what type of mould (although we were very slack with recording our results haha).
I squirted breastmilk on one piece of bread, and you can see that the 'breastmilked' area in the middle wouldn't go mouldy! I can't remember how long this one had been left, but weeks later all the rest of the bread had gone mouldy, but still not the part with the breastmilk!โ€

Breastmilk is a living fluid with antibacterial and antiviral factors, and so much more!!
