We couldn't be more proud of our Family Medicine Resident-turned-Sports Medicine Fellow, Dr. Shannon Philipps! After completing her residency, she's now at Ascension Resurrection pursuing her passion for sports medicine.
And that passion is taking her places! We're thrilled to announce that Dr. Philipps will be presenting her Ironman research at the 2023 American Medical Society for Sports Medicine conference.
Dr. Philipps has worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and we know she'll continue to make us proud as she advances in her career. Congratulations, Dr. Philipps! 🎉🎓🏊‍♀️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♀️

🏐 Many areas of sports medicine and pain medicine overlap. We learn more about that range of therapies by working with radiologist for spine injections.

💉An imaging examination called a discogram is used to assess back discomfort. If a particular aberrant disk in the spine is the source of your back discomfort, a discogram may be able to identify it.

🥏Each disc contains a sturdy outer layer called the annulus and a squishy, rubber-like core called the nucleus. When discs expand or rupture, they may put pressure on the spinal column's nerves, resulting in discomfort or weakness.

💧A contrast liquid is injected using x-ray guidance into the core of one or more spinal discs during a discogram.
The patient's back pain symptoms may momentarily be reproduced by this injection.

🩻An CT scan might be done as part of the surgery to get images of the injected disc.

⚾️ The phrase "little league elbow" describes a range of ailments to the medial side of the elbow that are frequently sustained by young pitchers, including medial epicondyle stress fractures, ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries, and flexor-pronator mass strains.

🩺 Clinical diagnosis is made when there is soreness over the medial elbow that gets worse with specialized testing and MRI scans.

🛏The recommended course of treatment includes a trial of rest, activity moderation, a reduction in innings pitched, and physical therapy.

🛠There may be a need for surgical intervention. For medial epicondyle avulsion fractures, ORIF of the medial epicondyle is indicated. For UCL disruption and insufficiency, consider UCL reconstruction.

The AMSSM conference was a wonderful experience for our fellows to finally be able to attend in person. One of the added bonuses was reconnecting with colleagues. Here with Dr. Stephenson is John Diefenderfer, DO. Dr. Diefenderfer is a 2018 graduate of our very own St. Vincent's Family Medicine Residency Program. Before we even had a sports medicine fellowship he was blazing the trail for future residents. He completed his fellowship with the Maine-Dartmouth Sports Medicine program then pursued an additional year of Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine in the same location, where is now an attending.

Looking back to our biggest event of the year, at Ironman Florida, with over 2000 athletes racing and a 24 cot medical tent sometimes full of them. These current and future sports medicine fellows were apparently taking their jobs very seriously.

Here Dr. Stephenson is volunteering today as an ultrasound model at the 2022 AAO & AOASM Joint Convocation, where nationally renowned experts were demonstrating locations for potential nerve hydrodissection.
