What’s the difference between Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve?

Both support weight loss, but they work differently…

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass:
Offers powerful weight loss and excellent results for blood sugar control by creating a small stomach pouch and rerouting part of the intestines. It works by restricting food intake and altering gut hormones that regulate hunger, satiety, and metabolism.

Gastric Sleeve:
A simpler approach that removes part of the stomach to reduce hunger and portion size—while keeping digestion and nutrient absorption mostly intact. This procedure requires less long-term supplement needs.

We had participants ranging from a few months to a few years post-surgery, and everyone gave it their all.

This wasn’t just a yoga class. We had journaling, deep discussion, and community building. We overcame nerves and tackled something challenging, and we did it together.

Most people don’t know this about me, but I’ve been practicing yoga for years. Initially, I started with the simple goal of improving my golf game, but along the way, I discovered something far more valuable. Yoga has taught me how to stay grounded in stressful situations and the profound impact of intention, breath, and focus—not just on the mat, but in everyday life.

That’s why I’m excited to host a complimentary yoga class designed specifically and exclusively for the NFS bariatric support group at Hot Spot Power Yoga in San Marco led by Dawn Clapp.

This will be a safe, judgment-free space to connect with others on the same wellness path while learning how yoga can empower and strengthen you both physically and mentally.

This 90 minute session will include:
✨30 mins of discussion and journaling (15 mins at the beginning and the end)
✨60 minutes of learning and practicing the basics of yoga and how you can adapt postures to meet you where you are

We believe yoga is for everyBODY and that you are ready NOW!

Post-bariatric surgery, body image distortion is common and can negatively impact mental health. 🧠

Here are some things to watch out for:

- Avoiding or obsessing over your reflection.

- Comparing your body to others.

- Struggling to accept genuine compliments about your appearance.

Ensuring a healthy and successful outcome after weight loss surgery requires a lifelong commitment. Here are several strategies to help you stay on track:

☀️ Start walking as soon as possible: Gentle walks can significantly aid your recovery.

☀️ Eat small meals: Transition to smaller, more frequent meals post-surgery.

☀️ Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time: This helps prevent grazing and overeating. Aim for at least 65 g of protein a day.

☀️ Include non-starchy vegetables: Add veggies like cauliflower, asparagus, squash, and zucchini to your meals.

1️⃣ To prevent deficiencies and preserve muscle, focus on balanced meals within your daily calorie limit. Remember, everyone tolerates foods differently! 🥗 Your caloric intake is specific for the first year post-surgery.

2️⃣ Stick to the prescribed high-protein, low-carb diet with foods like eggs, meats, seafood, and more. 🥚🍗 It may take time to meet protein goals, so be patient. 🕒
