For more than a decade, Baptist Health has hosted the Sisisky-Kleppinger Lecture for Women’s Health to help bring important conversations to the forefront for women in our community.

From spine health to heart health and beyond, this event has created space to ask questions, learn from experts and better understand the changes women experience at every stage of life.

This year’s topic: perimenopause and menopause — stages often treated as taboo or dismissed as something women are expected to quietly push through. It’s time to change that. Our panel will break down what’s happening in the body and how to manage symptoms with clarity and confidence.

We hope you will join us:

Words can't begin to describe our gratitude to the volunteers who spend so much time helping our patients and our team. 💙

Last week, we threw a luncheon on their behalf to celebrate the tremendous impact they make daily. Our volunteers are often the unsung heroes of our hospital, and our entire team wanted to let them know just how much they're appreciated.

These men and women sacrifice their time to make a difference for those in need, and they truly make us . Let's hear it for them in the comments! 🎉

You may not see the smoke — but your body can feel it. 🔥💨

Across our offices and hospitals, we’re seeing more patients with symptoms linked to smoke exposure. Sinus pressure, headaches, ear discomfort and breathing irritation are becoming more common as wildfire smoke moves into our area.

Here’s what’s happening:

Smoke carries tiny particles that can irritate your eyes, nose, throat and lungs, even from miles away. That irritation can lead to inflammation, which is why symptoms like congestion, pressure and coughing are so common right now. For most people, symptoms are mild and improve with time. But it’s important to know when to take it more seriously.

Manage at home if you have:
• Mild sinus pressure or congestion
• Scratchy throat or watery eyes
• Occasional cough

Call your primary care provider or visit your local Carespot if you have:
• Ongoing or worsening sinus pain
• Ear pain or pressure
• Symptoms lasting more than a few days

Seek emergency care if you experience:
• Trouble breathing
• Chest tightness
• Severe wheezing or asthma flare

To help reduce exposure: stay indoors when possible, keep windows closed and consider limiting outdoor activity while air quality is impacted.

We’ve also seen an uptick in sick visits across some of our offices. If you’re having trouble getting in to see your primary care provider, options like virtual care or CareSpot can help you get the support you need.

Every day, our teams see the impact of distracted driving. But this week, students saw it too.

During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Baptist Health and Wolfson Children's Hospital joined Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department and LifeFlight to bring the LifeFlight Experience to students at Providence School of Jacksonville.

From powerful stories shared by our emergency teams to a live crash simulation, extrication and helicopter landing, this wasn’t just a presentation — it was a real look at what happens in the moments that can change a life forever.

Between 2019 and 2023, 1,657 lives were lost on Florida roads in crashes involving teen drivers, and this time of year matters most. With proms, graduations and end-of-year celebrations, more teens are on the road — and one decision can change everything.

Before your teen heads out, make a plan together
▶️ Put the phone away
▶️ Limit distractions
▶️ And if there’s any doubt, call for a ride or take an Uber

We’re grateful to Providence for the opportunity to spend time with their students, and to the first responders who show up every day, on the worst days, to save lives and bring patients safely into our care.

It takes all of us — from the scene, to the sky, to the hospital. And if even one student makes a different choice behind the wheel, it matters.

We built our award-winning Center for Professional Excellence so our health care heroes could have a realistic place to simulate real-world medical emergencies. 🩺

We recently had a group of pre-op RNs sit in on a mock Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (the removal of the gallbladder through several small abdominal incisions) so they could be prepared if the situation arises in real time. It's this kind of simulation that makes our team as prepared as can be for any possibility! 💙

Most people know that anemia is a disorder indicating a lack of iron, but what happens if you have too much iron in your blood? That’s a condition called hemochromatosis, and it affects nearly one million Americans. 🩸

In our latest Juice article, we discuss what happens when you have too much or too little iron in your blood. To learn more about symptoms, treatment, and to see if any of these conditions apply to you, read the article here: https://go.baptistjax.com/3QQoQ8s

One of the first things you notice about Johnny Woodhouse is his eyes — always alert, always scanning, always looking for someone he can help. That instinct comes from his years as a journalist, and it’s what makes him such an incredible volunteer today.

“I like to study faces to see if they need help,” Johnny says. “I’ve been here long enough to know when someone might need a wheelchair, directions or just someone to talk to.”

Johnny began his work as a volunteer with our Auxiliary in the early 90's and then came back in 2013 when his wife, Anne, had breast cancer (she's cancer-free now!). Over the years, he and Anne have given their time together, and when they retired from their full-time jobs, they chose to continue volunteering, turning their Friday nights into something special.

“It became our Friday night date night tradition,” Johnny says. “We’d spend hours talking about our day and the moments that stayed with us. We couldn’t believe we got to do this.”

It’s , and we’re proud to highlight volunteers like Johnny and all they do to support our health system.

Known as a bit of a Baptist Health historian, Johnny also helps share some of our most meaningful patient stories (go.baptistjax.com/4vnaFrw) — both as a volunteer and as a contract writer for our Marketing & Communications team. You can often find him striking up conversations or helping guests find their way. Over the years, he has built close connections with patients, and while he says it can be emotionally taxing, it’s an experience unlike any other.

“I can’t say it enough… I can’t believe they let me do this,” he says. “It’s such a privilege to offer even the smallest bit of help during a difficult time. If I can make someone’s day a little easier, then I’ve done well.”

If you ever find yourself on our / Wolfson Children's Hospital campus, you might spot Johnny — or more likely, he’ll spot you first. With a story to share and a gift for conversation, he has a way of making everyone feel like an old friend. 💙

Thank you for making us , Johnny. Let’s hear it for him in the comments! 🎉

This is what a moment of distraction can turn into.

It’s not worth it. Not for a text. Not for anything.

We see it far too often — teen drivers, preventable crashes, lives changed in seconds.

From the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department to Life Flight Jacksonville to our Wolfson Children's Hospital trauma team, it takes all of us when the unthinkable happens.

And in the US, more than half of deadly crashes are linked to preventable driver behaviors.

If you have a teen driver — have this conversation today.

Please join us in saying congratulations to Laura on winning our prestigious LOTUS Award for exceptional non-nursing care! 🏆 💙

Laura is the kind of health care hero who doesn’t think twice about going the extra mile — it’s simply who she is. She consistently goes above and beyond to make sure patients feel seen, supported and cared for. There’s no better example than the story shared in her nomination.

The patient who nominated Laura broke her arm after her husband's funeral, and once Laura learned the story, she jumped into action. We'll let the nomination speak for itself:

"Laura came out of her office, and I explained that I fell at my husband's funeral, and of course, I was a mess, crying. She said as soon as she was finished with the man before me, she would get my X-rays. It didn't take long, and when Laura came out of the office to bring me the X-rays, she also had a vase with pink roses. This was overwhelming. A total stranger took the time to get me, a total stranger, flowers! I can still cry. It is just so touching. It was so comforting. Laura is an employee every organization needs and wants."

We couldn't agree more with that last sentence! Give it up for Laura in the comments! 🎉

We are to share that both Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville and Baptist Medical Center South are the first hospitals in Northeast Florida to be certified as a “Florida Resuscitation Center of Excellence!” 🏆

The designation was awarded for our commitment to working with the First Coast Emergency Medical Services (EMS) community to strengthen the network of life-saving care for patients experiencing cardiac arrest. Certification as a Florida Resuscitation Center of Excellence signifies that hospitals have met or exceeded program standards for resuscitation care, setting them apart as leaders in these life-saving practices.

More than 417,000 people in the U.S. die from cardiac arrest each year, and resuscitation such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), respiratory resuscitation, defibrillation and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) can quickly restore circulation and the delivery of oxygen, helping to save lives and support the best possible recovery.

“Acting quickly can make a lifesaving difference and gives patients the best chance to recover,” said Tammy Daniel, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, executive vice president and chief nursing officer for Baptist Health. “Our highly skilled teams are trained to respond to these emergencies quickly when every second matters.”

As always, we’ll continue to go the extra mile to provide the kind of health care services that save lives within our Jacksonville community! 💙 Read more in the comments below.

Gillian was an introvert whose beautiful smile allowed her to connect with everyone she met. She was a gifted artist and painter. Up until a month before her death from cancer, she was volunteering at Wolfson Children's Hospital with sick kids. Gillian was the kind of person we always say we want to be, but can't seem to find the time.

Her mother, Connie, is finding the time.

It’s been almost 2 years since she lost Gillian at age 23, but Connie is paying tribute to her daughter by volunteering weekly at Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center, Wolfson Children's Hospital and Baptist Health. She spends a lot of time in some of the very rooms where her daughter was treated throughout her eight and a half year battle, channeling the positivity and light that followed Gillian everywhere she went.

“It makes me feel closer to her every day I'm here,” Connie says.

Connie considers volunteering to be a part of her “quest to understand Gillian better” and to feel the “quiet joy” and strength her daughter possessed. It’s this quest that has led her to form lasting bonds with our patients, serve on the board of Art with a Heart in Healthcare, and spearhead many projects that bring creativity and joy to those in need. It’s hard to say who gets more out of it—her or the patients.

"The most fulfilling part of volunteering has been getting to know patients and hearing their stories," Connie explains. "It's a privilege to be able to provide them support and even become good friends with some of the patients."

One of those patients is a young man diagnosed with the same cancer as Gillian, and the two have formed a bond from bittersweet circumstances. In fact, there have been multiple signs of Gillian's influence on her mother's volunteering that have been impossible to ignore, such as being able to visit the father of Gillian's best friend when he was hospitalized and as he continues treatment. Grief is not linear, but Connie says she's formed a better understanding of both the process and her daughter's life.

"Volunteering has taught me the importance of serving others. You will find so much joy in the time you spend with patients," Connie shared. If that sounds a lot like the kind of thing Gillian would say, that's because it is — she was the consummate friend and support system to others.

It’s impossible to summarize the enormity of Gillian’s legacy, and Connie isn’t trying to; she’s merely adding to it, incrementally, every hour she spends volunteering in her daughter’s honor.

It's , so please join us in the comments in thanking Connie for all that she does. Thank you, Connie... and thank you, Gillian.
