Why do we give newborn babies the Hepatitis B Vaccine? Great question! Here's a quick look at how we got here:
π¦ Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease.
πΆπΌ Left untreated, about 1 in 4 children who have chronic hepatitis B will eventually die of health problems related to their infection, such as liver damage, liver disease, or liver cancer.
π€°π» Newborns can acquire hepatitis B at birth (perinatal hepatitis B) if the mother is infected with the hepatitis B virus. Babies and young children can also get hepatitis B from close contact with family members or others who might be infected.
β When babies become infected with Hepatitis B, they have about a 90% chance of developing a lifelong, chronic infection.
β
Administering a hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth, known as a birth dose, is highly effective in preventing infection in newborns.
π This "birth dose" was adopted by the US in 1991. At that time, nearly 20,000 babies and children were infected with the Hepatitis B virus annually.
