Every day, our nurses show up ready for the hard moments, the wins and everything in between. This , we pause to celebrate them. 🙌 Here's a little look at the people behind the scrubs! Meet Vivian, an Assistant Nurse Manager in the Wolfson Children's Hospital pediatric ER at .
Q: Why did you decide to become a nurse?
A: I've known I wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl. I am the oldest daughter of five siblings and have always been a caretaker. As a babysitter in high school, I realized pediatrics would be my specialty, and I have loved every single bit of the past 18 years doing it.
Q: What has your career journey at Baptist been like?
A: I started at Baptist/Wolfson Children's in 2009 as a PICU nurse. It was my dream job, and I got to spend 10 years there working with some of the most incredible families and teammates. I was able to grow as a nurse and gain my skills with ECMO, CRRT and more. At the end of 2019, I was blessed with the opportunity to help open the Wolfson Children's ER at Baptist South. Being able to open and grow this unit from day one with an amazing team by my side has been so much fun. I live nearby and have two sons, so it was important to me both professionally and personally that this ER be one of the best around!
Q: Can you recall a specific patient or team interaction that made you proud to be in the nursing field?
A: Working in high acuity areas like the PICU and ER, you get close quickly to families on their absolute worst days. As a nurse and a mom, I've bonded with many patients and families throughout the years that have been very special to me. Whether tragic or joyous, I value all the experiences they've given me. I feel so proud when patients come back and remember me from prior visits and tell me they feel safe with me taking care of them.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at Baptist Health?
A: Baptist has always given me support and opportunity for growth. I love the wide range of committees that include bedside nurses to help make decisions that impact our patient care. I appreciate the educational opportunities that they give us to expand in our specialties. Through Baptist, I have been able to attend several educational conferences throughout the years and certification reviews to obtain and maintain my CPEN (Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse) certification. Baptist has also given me coworkers who have become like family and some of my lifelong friends.
Q: What would you tell someone who is considering entering the nursing field?
A: Absolutely do it! There are so many specialties and services that you could work for. You can even change your mind and start something new if it turns out it wasn't the right area for you. Baptist has always prioritized retaining good team members and helping them find their perfect fit within the system.
Q: If you weren’t a nurse, what would you do for a living?
A: I love football, so I probably would've done something with sports medicine. If I had to choose something outside the medical field completely, I would probably work at the Humane Society snuggling shelter dogs all day!
