Cardiac Vision Sports Cardiology and ECG Screening in Athletes
Summer is the time for school physicals and at Cardiac Vision we want all of our athletes from high schools, colleges, professional, or even recreational athletes to be safe. We have partnered up with Who We Play For to do routine ECG’s for athletes aside from the history and physical. Now there is a whole controversy regarding the benefits of routine ECG screening in athletes. Some raise the question if it is needed at all given the low incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in the US, why is it mandated in Europe?, is it cost effective?, does it increase the cost given the high rate of false positives?, and the most common concern is how do we get our athletes back into play in a timely manner given the increased false positive readings. Our question to everyone is “how much is it worth to you to avoid one traumatic death of a young athlete for maybe less than one percent of your overall sports budget?” Unfortunately, we are contacted once something fatal happens in a high school or even at a college level sporting event. Once the institution seeks our services, they realize the low cost, our amazing turn around time for athletes to be back in play, and how much the parents and the whole community appreciates the fact that we are doing everything to protect the athlete. We have been dealing with student and recreational athletes for the past 3 years and are of aware of the barriers to make sure athletes are safe and actualizing their potential to be the best. Currently, we are screening atUniversity of North Florida, College of Coastal Georgia, and local high schools in Jacksonville such as Bolle’s Highschool, Ponta Vedra Highschool, Duval Charters School Academy, University Christian and etc.. Let us know if your institution is interested not only in Jacksonville and Chicago, but any other city. Check out our team doing screenings at UNF. We can always use volunteers to be part of our fun and rewarding event.

Physicians tell me to exercise and lose weight but how??
Many of my patients express this concern of having no guidance to reach their exercise goals. The first question I ask my patients prior giving an exercise prescription is, "What are your goals?" Is it to live a long life and decreasing your chance of cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction and coronary artery disease or losing weight, increasing quality of life , or all of the above. Check out this potentially life saving blog at www.cardiacvision.com under news blog.

Valve surgery without opening my chest? Yes, Cardiac Vision is now part of the TAVR Team at Memorial Jacksonville!

This is true, cardiac vision is part of the TAVR team at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. Aortic stenosis is progressive and life-threatening. Once symptoms appear, untreated patients have a poor prognosis. Aortic valve disease is responsible for more than 25,000 deaths yearly. It affects up to 7% of the population over the age of 65.2 After the onset of symptoms, patients with severe aortic stenosis have a survival rate as low as 50% at 2 years and 20% at 5 years without aortic valve replacement.

So check out what TAVR and read all about it at www.cardiacvision.com. Perhaps this could be an option for you or someone you love.

Isaiah Austin 2014 NBA prospect career ended due to Marfan's, how do I know if I have Marfan's?
These are the type of issues that sports cardiologists deal with in order to make sure that all athletes are healthy enough to compete at a high level. Genetic conditions like Marfan's can go undiagnosed throughout an athlete's career which makes them at high risk for having sudden cardiac death. Scientists and organizations can debate on the need for screening athletes but the fact remains that such an event as sudden cardiac death leaves communities and families traumatized and helpless. So how can Marfan's Syndrome cause sudden cardiac death? Check out the blog under news blog at www.cardiacvision.com.

Testosterone level and heart disease. Who should get tested?

Another common question in my clinic but of course mostly by men. This topic is becoming more popular and truth of the matter is we do not have all the answers. However, there is enough information to realize that there is a definite need for screening for hypogonadism and yes this does have detrimental effects to the heart. On my next news blog I have tried to summarize who should get screened and how this relates to cardiovascular risks. So come check out the news blog and learn about men and testosterone levels at www.cardiac vision.com.

WHY DO I NEED TO TAKE BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATIONS WHEN MY BLOOD PRESSURE IS NORMAL? This comes from one of my wise attendees at a presentation I was doing at Cypress Village rehab. Also it is a question I get asked quite often by my own patients as well as my friends and family members. Check out my blog at www.cardiacvision.com as I do my best to answer this question for the general population as well as for athletes.

FIRST PATIENT AT CARDIAC VISION RAISES A GOOD QUESTION--My heart contracts fine but they said I have heart failure? Does that make sense? This was something my very first patient at Memorial Hospital brought to my attention. Well it does make sense because there are, generally speaking, two phases of the heart- contraction and relaxation. Most people get caught up with the contraction phase being abnormal termed systolic dysfunction which is when the heart does not contract normally. Popular belief is that solo practice doesn't survive in this age of medicine which may be true. But I am still daring to try. The concept at Cardiac Vision is not to expand but get limited amount of patients so that they get individualized care. Looking forward to meeting my niche of patients and taking care of them starting Feb 1st. Follow us on twitter as well.
