When toys do all the talking (lights, music, buttons), kids don’t have as much space for creativity, imagination, and communication.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good battery operated toy and they absolutely have their place! Think core words like “on,” “off,” “again,” “all done,” etc.

But when we pause the noise…
we create space for:
➡️ joint attention
➡️ shared enjoyment
➡️ turn-taking
➡️ gestures
➡️ words

That “broken” toy?
It’s actually an opportunity.

Try this:
Take the batteries out of one toy this week and see what happens when you become the fun.

Think:
“ready… set… GO!”
“uh oh!”
“help!”

Want to build your child’s language… without asking a single question?

Try this: self talk.

Self talk is when you talk about what you’re doing while your child is watching.

“I’m cutting apple.”
“Wash hands.”
“Open door.”

No pressure. No quizzing. Just modeling.

This works because your child is seeing and hearing the words at the same time, which helps them understand and learn new vocabulary more naturally.

You can do this all day long during the routines you’re already doing like getting dressed, snack time, bath time, cleaning up.

If your child isn’t understanding simple directions, using words, or seems frustrated when communicating, it may be a good time to connect with a speech-language pathologist.

Why do we choose functional words in speech therapy for kids with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS)?

Honestly, I believe choosing functional words benefits any child with a speech delay.

These words are useful and practical for kids. They give a way to express their needs, feelings, and interact with other others.

These words are more motivating, which fosters high intensity repetition. This is essential for kids with CAS for establishing motor planning patterns.

These words boost confidence and increase their participation with family, friends, & at school.

These words, naturally promote generalization because there will be loads of reasons to use them outside of the therapy room.

Struggling to elicit CH from your client or just looking for some fresh ideas? Check out this cheat sheet!

Elicitation Tips:

Try facilitative contexts like “tr” and “nch”

Use a mirror to help visualize the lip rounding

Use rounded vowels to naturally encourage lip rounding i.e. ouch, chew

Produce a quick /t/ sound, followed by a long /sh/ sound, eventually blending them together: T-sh... T-sh... Ch

Pair the sound with a quick hand movement like punching

Round the lips while making /t/ followed by the vowel /u/ “oo” making quick repetitions until CH is heard

Practice Ideas:

Play-Doh Chop
Roll a long Play-Doh snake and have a child practice /ch/ while chopping their Play-Doh logs

Search for CH
Play iSpy in the car, find items around the house, or look through books to spot words with the /ch/ sound

Time for Lunch
Feed puppets and toys foods and silly items with the /ch/ sound

“Time for Lunch. Let’s put cheese on the sandwich.”

Chalk list
Using chalk, make word lists and draw pictures of words with the /ch/ sound

Choose one
Use small containers, filled with mini objects, toys, or everyday items and practice, saying the phrase “I choose…” Add an extra challenge by filling the containers with items that have the /ch/ sound

“I choose yellow. I found cheese!”

Check it
Play games, make pretend lists, or go on scavenger hunts while child checks items off their list. For an added challenge, make the items on the list /ch/

“I found cherries! Check it!”

What are some of your favorite tips for working on CH? ⬇️

One common myth about AAC is that it only benefits or should be used with non-speaking individuals. AAC is a powerful tool that can support many types of communicators including both speaking and non-speaking individuals.

AAC, or augmentative and alternative communication, are tools, strategies, and technologies used to support or replace spoken language for individuals with speech or language difficulties.

Types of AAC range from gestures or facial expressions to picture boards and communication books to speech-generating devices and apps on iPads.

Parents & caregivers, if your child isn’t talking yet or struggles to use words to communicate effectively, talk to your child’s SLP about ways to incorporate AAC at home!

A few quick ideas would be….

Place pictures of your child’s favorite snacks and drinks on the fridge to encourage making independent requests.

Make a “menu” of favorite songs, books, shows, movies, or toys.

Teach your child simple signs and gestures for words like more, want, play, all done, potty, etc.

In the trenches of potty training? Use a recordable button to make a “potty” button they can use to tell when they need to go.
