You don’t need fancy toys or complicated activities to build your child’s language.

Some of the best moments happen in the pause… the “uh oh”… the wait, something’s missing here moments.

When we gently hold back, get a little silly, or create a tiny problem to solve, we’re giving our kids a reason to communicate. And that’s where the magic happens.

These simple “communication temptations” (or playful sabotages 😉) help turn everyday routines into opportunities for more words, longer phrases, and meaningful interaction.

Try one today, pause, and wait. You might be surprised what they say.

Save this for later and let me know which one your child responds to most!

Ever notice your child can say a sound in some words… but not others? 🤔

This happens because speech sounds are influenced by the sounds around them. This is called coarticulation and we can actually use it to help kids produce tricky sounds more easily.

For example, if a child is having trouble with /ch/ in a word like chips, adding a helper word can make it easier:

👉 “eat chips”

The /t/ at the end of eat helps the tongue move into the correct position for the /ch/ sound. Once the child can say it in the phrase, we can slowly work toward saying the word chips on its own.

Save this tip to try at home!

Some of the most powerful language learning happens during everyday moments of play.

These 6 strategies are ones I use all the time in speech therapy sessions, and they’re simple strategies you can try at home.

✨ Create a reason to communicate
✨ Pause and wait
✨ Add one more word
✨ Follow your child’s lead
✨ Model language during play
✨ Expand what your child says

The goal isn’t to quiz your child or make them repeat words. Instead, focus on modeling language, giving them opportunities to communicate, and building language naturally during play and daily routines.

Small changes in how we interact with kids can make a big difference in how language develops.

Save this post so you can come back to these strategies later!

Gliding is one of the most common phonological processes we see in young children. This happens when sounds like /l/ are replaced with /w/ (think “wion” for lion). It’s developmentally expected for a while, but typically fades by about age 5.

In this session we’re using minimal pairs therapy to help him hear and understand how one small sound change can completely change a word’s meaning (lock vs. walk). Instead of just practicing the sound in isolation, we focus on contrast so he learns why the sound matters.

You’ll see me using models, visual cues for tongue placement, and gentle verbal prompts to support accurate /l/ production while keeping the activity play-based and motivating.

Have questions about this session or wondering if your child’s speech and language skills are developing as expected? Drop a comment below or send me a DM and let’s chat!

If your child says “tat” for “cat” or “doe” for “go,” you may be hearing a speech pattern called fronting.

Fronting happens when children make sounds in the front of their mouth instead of the back. Sounds like /k/ and /g/ are produced in the back of the mouth, but some children substitute easier sounds like /t/ and /d/.

Want to practice these sounds at home?

Try activities like:
* car ramp play (“ready, set… GO!”)
* pretend cooking (“cut the cake,” “cookie”)
* silly animal sounds (“grrrr,” “quack”)
* the “magic cough” trick to feel the back sound

Most children outgrow fronting by around 3½–4 years old, but if it continues beyond that age, speech therapy can help support clearer speech.

If you’re wondering whether your child’s speech is age-appropriate, we’re always happy to help guide you in the right direction.

Books and toys are one of my favorite “speech therapy hacks” for building language through play.

When children hear words in a story and then use those same words during play, their brains create stronger connections for vocabulary, comprehension, and storytelling.

This simple pairing turns passive listening into active language learning.

Try it at home:
1️⃣ Read the book together
2️⃣ Bring out toys that match the story
3️⃣ Act it out and talk about what the characters are doing

Simple. Playful. Powerful for language development.

✨ Pair the book with the toy.

One of my favorite ways to boost language?
Don’t just read the story… bring it to life.

When we pair books with toys, figurines, or little manipulatives, kids can:

🧠 Act out the story (hello, comprehension!)🗣 Hear AND use new vocabulary🔁 Retell events in order💭 Practice problem solving & predicting💬 Expand sentences through play

For many kids, especially those with language delays, listening alone isn’t enough. When their hands are involved, their brains light up.

Instead of just reading about the farm… grab the animals.Instead of just reading about construction… bring the trucks.Instead of just reading about emotions… use figurines to show the feelings or grab a mirror and make silly faces together!

Play makes the language stick.

Save this for your next library trip.💛

Be sure to check out lift the flap books and felt companions! They are my absolute fave!
