UF Health TraumaOne

UF Health TraumaOne The only adult and pediatric Level I trauma program in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. It is a rigorous review of every aspect of the program.
(1)

When UF Health TraumaOne began in 1983, it was the first trauma program in the state of Florida. Today, it is still the only adult and pediatric Level I trauma program in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. On any given day, anyone can end up a patient in the TraumaOne trauma center. Ordinary activities - picking up the kids from school, painting the house, walking the dog - can turn into a life-or-death situation in the blink of an eye. UF Health TraumaOne consists of five components:
- Trauma center
- Flight services
- Communications/dispatch
- Trauma prevention and education
- Emergency preparedness

TraumaOne's highly qualified staff consists of UF Health trauma surgeons, nurses and others with extensive training in caring for trauma patients. Unlike other hospitals in the area, surgeons and other health professionals such as neurosurgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthopaedic trauma surgeons and cardiothoracic surgeons are available on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The state's trauma programs are governed by a strict set of standards set by the Florida Department of Health. Every three years, TraumaOne undergoes a site visit in order to maintain its Level I trauma center accreditation. In 2013, UF Health TraumaOne added a third helicopter and implemented a new policy to dramatically cut down on our response time. Instead of basing our helicopters at UF Health Jacksonville, we have strategically placed them around the region ready to fly at a moment’s notice. Locations include Flagler Hospital in St. Johns County, Yulee in Nassau County, and Lake City Regional Airport in Columbia County.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to recognize Brantley County Paramedic, Beau Sexton for his accomplishment of successfully completing a difficult airway on a patient with severe maxillofacial trauma. Beau acted calmly and efficiently, limiting any secondary insults while the patient was under his care. In a profession where we do not always get to control the results; Beau did a phenomenal job at controlling the process!

Today’s shoutout goes to Columbia County Fire & EMS for their superior work on a scene Stroke Alert. Rural EMS is never easy—balancing time, distance, and rapidly evolving patient conditions takes experience, calm, and strong clinical judgment.

This crew made all the right moves. Their appropriateness in transport decision-making, resource utilization, and commitment to getting the right patient to the right place at the right time exemplifies what exceptional prehospital care looks like.

Today we pause to honor a true hero — Allan Williams.

On November 8, Allan tragically lost his life during a helicopter crash in Wilson County while performing his calling, caring for others in crisis.

To the Vanderbilt family and all first‐responders who fly, drive, and save lives every day: we stand with you. We grieve with you. We honor Allan’s legacy of courage, compassion and kindness.

Let’s hold his wife, his children, his colleagues in our hearts, and carry forward the mission he lived: serving others without hesitation.

In helicopter EMS, skill gets you airborne, but the pilot gets you home.
The importance of having a pilot who brings you to the patient and back safely, smoothly, and professionally can’t be overstated. Their judgment, precision, and calm presence set the tone for the entire mission.

Every safe landing, every challenging approach, every night-time scene call… it all starts with a pilot who knows how to navigate risk, manage the environment, and keep the crew mission-focused.

To our pilots: thank you for being the quiet professionals who give us the ability to care for our communities at 2,500 feet.
