Trauma is not just what happened.
It is how it lives in our nervous system and our relationships.

Here's a secret: self-compassion does not make you weak or lazy.

There's a misconception that you need to be tough on yourself to maintain focus as you move toward your goals. On the contrary, research shows that self-compassionate people aim just as high as self-critical people do. The difference is that self-compassionate people don't fall apart when, as sometimes happens, they don't meet their desired result.

Instead of expecting your disparaging inner critic to be waiting in the wings if you fail, turn instead to offer yourself words of kindness and support while you work your way toward your goal.

You might think you're in control of unwanted emotions when you ignore them, but they control you.

Internal pain always comes out—always. The best way to cope with amplification is to sit with your emotions. Giving yourself a small moment of reflection to process a tough emotion can improve your relationships and your day to day experience as a whole. Try to really see yourself in that moment.

Ask, how can I best support myself in this moment? What do I need? The answers to these questions could be as simple as taking a few deep breaths, placing your hands over your heart or belly, going for a short walk, or making a cup of tea.

You can’t control how your partner shows up, but you can control how you do. When you stop trying to manage their behavior and start focusing on your own emotional responses, everything shifts. Responding instead of reacting is an act of emotional accountability. It creates safety, not defensiveness. Connection, not distance. This is how secure relationships grow: two people taking ownership of their part and meeting each other from a grounded, self-aware place.
