Jacksonville Center for Counseling

Jacksonville Center for Counseling The Jacksonville Center for Counseling has been serving the Jacksonville Community since 2009.

Our practice was founded on one basic principle: to be the best in the industry. From that philosophy, we start with a dedicated administrative staff with over 50 years in the medical industry who have the knowledge and training to ensure your private health information and HIPPA compliance is always entrusted. We offer you a private and safe environment that allows the process of counseling to occur naturally, focusing on the area you are seeking assistance with. We take pride in the diversity of extensive training our therapists have and invite you to share that experience in a non-judgmental environment.

Our last introduction is me, Penney O’Donnell Lyons, LMHC. I’m not shy about letting my nerd flag fly! I am unapologetically Christian and counsel from a biblical worldview. I specialize in anxiety but also do a fair amount of couples work. Here is a little more about me:

I have been very fortunate in my career and life experiences in that I have had opportunities to work with many diverse populations. Whether this diversity spans different ages, different cultures or different settings, I believe these experiences are invaluable. Being a counselor can be an amazing profession full of challenges, heartaches and celebration. We see you at your worst and see you at your best, but there is no better reward than to see you succeed.

I come from a compassionate, non-judgmental, strengths-based perspective in my clinical practice and in life. I can help you learn life skills and identify alternate healthy thinking patterns so that you can decrease your anxiety and depression while increasing your self-esteem and quality of life.

Asking for help can be difficult, especially if you have never worked with a counselor before. This article, written by Megan Hale, does a great job at addressing 10 aspects of the therapeutic relationship that are either unknowns or common misconceptions. I hope this clarifies what you can expect from working with a counselor.

1. I don’t think you’re crazy.
I think you are amazingly unique trying to find your way in the world. None of us is perfect and I surely don’t expect you to be anywhere close to mastery when you’re learning new skills to change your life. Effective change usually requires trial and lots of errors. It means you’re trying! Plus, if I think you’re being irrational, I’ll tell you.

2. Trust is everything.
Your ability to connect with me will be the number one factor determining how well we work together. If you don’t feel like you click with me after a few sessions, it’s OK to let me know and seek out a different therapist. We all need different things, and my main priority is for you to achieve your goals.

3. My job is not to psychoanalyze you.
My job is to be curious and to help you gain more understanding. A good therapist doesn’t claim to have all the answers for why you are the way you are, although we may have some ideas that we will willingly share with you. When it comes to getting answers and more understanding, we will form hypotheses together and you will come to your own conclusions. A therapist facilitates that process. They don’t tell you how to think/believe/act.

4. I’m not here to give you advice.
I’m here to share my knowledge with you and help you make your own decisions that are balanced, rational and well-explored. Strengthening your own reasoning and decision-making skills will increase your independence and self-esteem. Win-win!

5. Work through your emotions with me instead of quitting, anger included.
Therapy is the perfect place to learn how to express your feelings. That’s what I’m here for – to give you a space to try out new ways of being, thinking, and feeling. Take advantage of this. When we learn how to work through our negative emotions with others, it increases our relationship skills and makes us more comfortable with voicing our hurts. This is a necessary component to maintaining relationships and managing emotions in a healthy way.

6. I expect you to slide backward to old behavior patterns and I’m not here to judge you.
Most people judge themselves enough for at least two people. I encourage my clients to come clean. It’s only through acknowledging our steps backward that we can figure out what’s standing in the way so that you can catapult forward. Relapse is VERY common and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

7. You deserve to be happy.
Happiness is not reserved for special people. Everyone has regrets, things we wish we never would have done, people we’ve hurt along the way, people who have hurt us either intentionally or unintentionally. I’m a firm believer that we can heal our wounds and step into happiness. You deserve it just as much as the next person.

8. I can’t “fix” your life or your problems. Only you can.
I can help you gain more clarity, more understanding, and form a plan of action, but therapy is not a magic pill that erases all issues. It takes work, but if you’re up for the challenge, I’ll be there every step of the way!

9. The quickest way from point A to point B is action.
If you continue to come to therapy without putting any new behaviors or thoughts into action, progress will be a slow process for you. The path to action is different for everyone, but if you never do anything different, you’ll never get a different result. You’re the only one who can decide to take action. You hold all the power.

10. I want you to have the life you want.
I’m on your side. Your success is the ultimate gift to a therapist!
People come to therapy for all kinds of reasons. Usually people are experiencing a moderate level of discomfort in their lives and have noticed a toll on their work/school performance and in their relationships. Beginning therapy can be scary for some as they are showing a willingness to face tough topics, but for others, it’s a huge relief to finally be taking action to move in a different direction.

Therapy isn’t always easy, but I think it’s the most worthwhile gift you can give yourself. Find someone you trust and who puts you at ease. The relationship you build with your therapist is the most important aspect of all.

Jen Ducharme,LMHC, completes our trio of fearless leaders. She is available for virtual sessions only.
BIO:
Change results from the thoughts and actions we choose. In fact, these are the only things in life we do have control of. As a Counselor, I can help you build tools to reduce the impact that emotions or symptoms can have. Unfortunately society doesn’t teach us to pay attention to our thought and behavior. Yet, every moment we’ve experienced… all that we’ve ever thought, said or done… there are no redo’s or rewind buttons. We cannot change past chapters of our life. Where we can take power is now and the future chapters we have yet to write.

Whether you are struggling with life stress, changing an unhealthy pattern, accepting/understanding emerging symptoms, or wanting more tools to manage existing symptoms, without treatment every aspect of your life can become impacted negatively. You don’t have to be diagnosed with a mental health problem to benefit from therapy. Many people seek help for everyday concerns like relationship issues, job stress or self-doubt, while others turn to therapy at difficult times, such as divorce and loss. No matter the reason, things can improve, and I assure you the strength and ability you will use is already residing in you.

It is a passion of mine to empower others by helping them master skills that can be used for a lifetime. I believe therapy is a partnership formed on the basis of trust and connection and want to set a treatment goal based on what you are motivated to work on. I believe in working with you to build insight and challenge unhealthy thoughts, as well as to remove boundaries which often start as protection but become barriers to happiness. I believe in working to salvage roots of purpose and strength from the wounds you’ve encountered.

It would be an honor to work with you to identify ways to increase your quality of life. I have known that counseling was in my heart and future since I was young. I moved from Orlando to Jacksonville in 1996 to attend UNF, where I ended up completing all my degrees, the last of which was a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. I am licensed in the state of Florida and have had the opportunity to gain a broad range of experience in this field. Working in the mental health field since 2001, I have chosen positions that allowed development of clinical experience with teen – elderly age groups on a wide variety of life stressors and mental health issues, but also included focus on very specialized issues.

It can be very helpful to talk to close friends and family members. But, sometimes, we need help that the people around us aren’t able to provide, such as extra support or an outside perspective. Therapy is different. My job is to help you get to the root of your problems, overcome emotional challenges, and make positive changes in your life. If you are looking at this page, a part of you already knows it is possible that your quality of your life can be better than it is right now.

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old but on building the new”

- Socrates

I have spent most of my working career in the field of education and community counseling when I wasn’t parenting my three daughters. Now that I am a grandmother to five grandchildren I am looking forward to spending my retirement watching them grow.

I enjoy working with adults who have a variety of life experiences to share. Many people resist change, possibly because of the perceived risk or fear that change will not be beneficial in the end. Other people resist change because it’s more comfortable and familiar to stay with what you know. But no matter how hard you fight change happens.

I look forward to assisting people through these life experiences and providing support as they move into different areas of their life.

Paul Horn, LMHC is one of our fearless leaders!
Here’s what you need to know about him:

The journey to effective change begins where you are. It is important to realize that this is only one chapter of your life, and you have the choice on how your future chapters will be written. I truly believe that real change is achieved when you can recognize and accept your current situation, “It Is What It Is” (usually a mixture of comfort and discontent). Identifying and utilizing your strengths as building blocks for change is where our journey begins. I work with both individuals and couples, ages 18 years and older. My goal is to help you embrace and work through your struggle, be it with mood/emotion regulation, anxiety, relationship conflict, issues with grief or loss, or simply identifying and cultivating the sources of a deeper happiness in your life.

I am a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I received my Master’s of Science in Counseling and Psychology from Troy University. I have had the privilege to work in a community based mental health facility, which offered the opportunity to work with a lot of wonderful clients. I gained experience and insight into a diverse population with a vast array of mental health/life issues. I have experience with Individual Therapy; Crisis/Trauma; Crisis Intervention; Life Skills; Psych education; Chronic and Persistent diagnosed clients; and dual diagnosis. Additionally, I hold an MA in Human Resource Management; and retired from the Navy after 28 years of service, which allows me to bring additional perspective and experience to the table.

Kimberlee Riggs, LMHC is one of our amazing counselors! She’s ready to help! Here is her bio:

Life is full of circumstances that often take us by surprise; leaving us feeling out of control and struggling to move forward with our own plans and goals. While we may not have chosen our current circumstances, the way we choose to think and feel about these circumstances is within our control. Choosing to seek counseling can be the first courageous step you take towards finding workable solutions to identified needs.

With more than ten years of experience working with adults of all ages, I have learned that counseling is a collaborative endeavor that requires taking an honest assessment of where you are without judgment, while cooperatively clarifying your goals for treatment. I am passionate about empowering others to develop emotional awareness, increase problem-solving skills, improve relationships, create balanced living, influence positive change, and improve self-worth in order to reach the quality of life you desire. Trained in cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, and trauma-informed approaches to therapy, I draw from a variety of methods to create a tailored approach for each individual and situation.

I am a Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor, receiving my Masters of Arts in Counseling from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. Before joining the Jacksonville Center for Counseling, I worked in community mental health, gaining insight and experience with diverse populations and a wide range of mental health and life challenges; specializing in work with trauma survivors to overcome anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other challenges to daily living. I received training from the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence as a Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Victim’s Advocate assisting women in crisis. Additionally, I worked within faith communities mentoring individuals struggling with emotional or behavioral difficulties.

I am genuinely interested in helping people be successful and fulfilled. I count it as a privilege to be invited to be a part of your journey.

INTRODUCING Laura Elgin, LMHC!

Therapy is about empowering you to regain a sense of control over your thoughts, emotions, and, ultimately, your life. As your counselor, I’m here to offer support and guidance as you work toward understanding and managing these internal experiences—especially when they feel overwhelming or outside of your control. While you cannot be responsible for others' thoughts, feelings, or actions, you can choose how you think, feel, and respond to them. Together, we’ll explore the tools and strategies that can help you face these challenges with confidence, self-compassion, and strength.

My name is Laura Elgin, and I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida with a master’s degree from Walden University. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working in various settings, meeting a wide range of people, each with their own unique story and challenges. I’ve supported individuals dealing with struggles like depression, anxiety, self-image, self-worth, adjustment issues, grief, and trauma, among many others. These experiences have shaped my approach to therapy, allowing me to draw from proven methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and person-centered therapy to meet the unique goals of each person.

Whether civilian or military, couples or individuals, online or in person, my aim has always been to help people rediscover their strength, renew their hope, and find a deeper sense of purpose in their lives. Watching my clients grow and find happiness is the greatest reward of my work. For over 10 years, I’ve been dedicated to helping people feel more fulfilled and at peace with themselves, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to be a part of your journey toward greater well-being.
